A professional dilemma is an ethical problem that requires an individual to choose a particular course of action. Ethical dilemma assumes that the chooser will abide by codes of laws and work regulations. My dilemma that I experience at more than one workplace is sexual harassment. Just because a workplace have code of ethics regulations, that are suppose to provide a safe and healthy environment for their employees, doesnt mean employees understand and or pay attention to their behaviors. An example of my experience is when I was the only woman on the team being picked at or patronize by one team member that is a man.
When sexual harassment happens most people recognizes what is happening, but also faces workplace dilemma and looks the other way. The individual will be identified as M and I will reference myself as B in the scenario. Worked at a call center same shift as M arriving at 5am in the morning. So the start of the day is to get sign into to your assign desk. As soon as Im sign on I would always have a chat open from him with a message stating compliments to me as a woman, from smelling good to dressed nice today. I was offered personal telephone number and invitation to his home for dinner. If the workplace do not implement that sexual harassment will not be tolerate than people will not stand up for whats right in which will create an ethical dilemma.
M was an employee just like B, and he had the authority as a man to do what he was doing, so he felt enjoyment with the approaches. It begins to drain me because it didnt stop immediately. B begins to lose interest in work and was unbalance and late from breaks. I knew I had the power as a woman to stop it after he was consistent with it. B took a stronger stand against the harassment by responding with: it is not wanted, not welcome, and no return on the behavior.
There are times I would be very quiet and not say anything. In a situation like this you, are facing two different signs of negatives submission to conduct your conscience or being intimidated. The ethic in question is to go against ones will in an unwanted way. The company is responsible for B well-being while at work. Some of the verbal language uses were sexual teasing, remarks, pressure for dates, sexual looks are gestures.
My values and respect as a woman was in conflict with the remarks made during work shift were inappropriate. The work conversation via chat area was for employee to
