O’Connor was a religious Christian writer who pointed out American cultures changes. For example, violence, race relation, and class discrimination. The title “A Good Man is Hard to Find” emphasizes the plot of the short story: A journey into a family who risk their lives going to Florida, who is astonishingly come upon the misfit that is a loose from the Federal Pen. The Grandmother reveals what she was trying to tell her son Bailey, have come to a shocking truth. The grandmother, Bailey, and Bailey’s family, in the end are in an unpleasant situation who tries to escape from the misfit. Unfortunately, the grandmother, Bailey, and Bailey’s family faced the harsh reality of getting killed all because of the grandmother’s wrong facts she discussed with the family. The plot of “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is best understood by evaluating character and irony.
Characters are usually searching for a mysterious deliverance. The main characters in this story are the misfit and the grandmother. The grandmother is an old lady with old fashioned ideas and manners. She is directive, talkative, a bit silly, and full of her self. The grandmother wanted to participate in planning where the family is going and because of her insisting on what they should do, the whole family is in Toombsboro, Georgia stranded with the killer. Wearing white gloves, a navy blue church dress, and a matching hat, the grandmother thought that it’s a good idea for the sole purpose of being recognized as a woman in case some one saw her lying dead in the high way. The grandmother phony readiness for death is a miserable characteristic and is revealed when she encounters the misfit. When she is left a lone with the misfit, she shows her self to be the least prepared for death. Her beliefs, attitudes, and morals show that she is still a significant person with the knowledge that come with her age. The misfit is an escaped convict who has gray hair and is smart. The misfit reveals himself as a polite, sociable criminal who is misjudged from many people. In the past, the misfit was a good man until he is accused of killing his father and becomes an aggressive criminal. When the grandmother encounters with the misfit, she tries to talk him out of his predicament. Both Characters are in two different levels with concerns and religion. They are not a likable. The misfit disagreed with the grandmother many times. This story contrasted “the Grandmother” and “the Misfit” in religious beliefs and the unaffectedness and comprehension of those beliefs. The misfit believed that Jesus didn’t existed and chooses a life of evil over good. On the other hand, the grandmother is a very religious person and tries to tell the misfit to pray. Unfortunately, religion caused her death.
In addition, there are many parts in this story that analyses Irony. An ironic situation is when the grandmother had warned the family about the criminal. Without really fearing, she encounters him herself. The grandmother and the family are very selfish and predicted nothing could ever go wrong. Another circumstance of irony is when the family passes by a cotton field and five graves that they foreshadow the near future. It was a sign of not surviving life. Life is so unpredictable. You don’t know who or what around you can harm you. Many people are warned ahead of time or some even receive signs something wrong is going to happen. A terrible and incongruous tragedy happened to my brother. He was one of those people that received a sign
Lorenzen: Your father said that they were the only people that could hope to stay at the stable. So do you intend to keep them all at home? Because the more they get from the stable- the better the whole family feels. And they go after the one person that they can help with their work with the stable?
Horny: So it should go well though. They stay and carry out the work for the stable?
Lorenzen: It’s not something all of a sudden can happen. Some of them are going to keep them there as long as they want if they are going to. You know, if you are being a long time and you want to be with them and a bit of time is put into their work, then you will have an advantage.
Horny: So it must go well but they don’t want to stay?
Lorenzen: Sometimes, they will do. I am sure that they will, at times. And we are talking about them at a certain point, so I don’t know exactly how. But I believe they will give them time or want to. And that is why I think it is a good idea. If there was a certain person it would hurt, and I think if there would be any positive action that would help them, then that person would stay.
Horny: I’m surprised about the fact that now the family lives at home for that long.
Lorenzen: That’s right. So maybe it could be this way? Or maybe they don’t want to stay here and come to the stable and do nothing at all. I want to have the family see that you are not going to stay here and take back where you came from.
Horny: We did not get to talk about that with the family for a while now. But the last part is interesting. Why the family are not making it up is in part due to what they have already done. What they have done is continue to send messages to the family of why they may have been sent there. They’re sent the messages that they are not doing right, that they don’t like the work.
Even if that was true, and the family was indeed trying to find some answers, they would have ignored them that way. It’s not like some people are out there who think their situation is going to change in the future? You go to the stable and ask the family questions that you don’t know where exactly? They would always say yes. In fact, I will say that they have been told as to why they are there.
Lorenzen: I’m not going to go into too many of the things they have now given up because my point is that they have still been there when they are gone for some time. So we are talking about them. That is why I want to speak
