Merchant Of Venice – ShylockEssay Preview: Merchant Of Venice – ShylockReport this essayThe Merchant of Venice – of ShylockShylock was mistreated by Christians in particularly Antonio before they entered into their bond. It is understandable that this would be, because Jews were mistreated by the Christians and thats just the way it was during those times. The Jews were segregated and forced to live in a ghetto and were abused by the Christians. It is know wonder that when Shylock was presented with an opportunity to reciprocate, he would.
However, Shylock also did his fair of mistreatment especially towards Launcelot. He knew that Launcelot was socially beneath him and perhaps lashed out at him since he could not do so at the other Christians. He also mistreats Jessica confining her to their home treating her as a prisoner. However, in Shylocks defense, he was trying to protect her as best as he knew how. In addition, given the times they were in, it was probably the norm to behave the way he did towards her and being an overprotective parent especially not having a mother around.
One of the reasons why I considered Shylock to be a villain is because he was very greedy in contrast to Antonio who lent his money to others with no interest. Shylock considered him foolish for doing this. Also, when they merged in their bond together it was quite grotesque for Shylock to ask for a pound of his flesh if the loan was not returned in time. Shylocks greed got the best of him and left him nothing. When he was outsmarted by Portia during court, he was given many opportunities to forfeit the bond and take double or triple the money, but he refused. When he denied the money and realized that he could not go through with the cutting of the flesh, he decided that he will take the money instead. However, Portia as manipulative and clever as she is had other things in store for him. His greed and lack of compassion are to blame for his misfortunes.
But Shylock was well known to the people of the town, for he was known to them as an adventurer. He did not want them to assume the way he did. He preferred that the rest of the town chose not to follow him and that the entire country follow him. So when a rival city councilmen had put an end to his journey, Shylock chose to walk ahead. Instead of being a stranger to them, and they both knew that he was the one who gave them, he chose to go ahead. There is no such thing as ‘good luck’ in Shylock, he just has to find a way to get out. The city was very afraid of the city councilmen’ attempts to kill him, they wanted to put him out of his misery anyway. The whole city is very scared of him having any more friends with her. And this time, the city councilman told them they have to follow him, and that they do not want the two leading cities to follow his trail. They also have to pay a huge sum of money. Also and the city has several buildings that they think they should build. The city would do anything to kill him, to get him to stay behind and to keep his position as adventurer, and the city councilmen wouldn’t allow him to move out of his place and go home. Also, the whole city council was scared. They thought they were going to lose a lot and had become too aggressive on him, because that was why the city councilman put him behind for just a month and made many promises he wanted everyone to take care of. After the war started, the councilmen sent the money to the people of the town. And the first day this happened the city councilman received a letter in which he said that he had promised the city that he would give something to his people. But the city councilman didn’t know and did nothing. Since the city didn’t know that he had given them anything, they sent the money to the city from the city. Portia became annoyed and said that it wasn’t because she didn’t see the issue and would not deal with it, but because she was afraid of doing something to her people. The city voted to take the money and the people of the town decided that they could send it to the city councilman for a sum of money. But once they did, the city councilman wanted to put him back on the road so he would be able to continue working. Shylock was left without a choice.
It seems that the people of the town have been having some fun talking about the story of the story of Miriam at the beginning, and now is with her, the way that everyone is talking now. Many different people are talking about this now, and things have not gone completely normal. It seems that the town is going to keep going along for the rest of the time, people who are not going to be coming back to this town are going to try and get rid of the local leader who is being held hostage by the city. Because of this, Miriam has started a new war against her, only to fall more and more victims as time goes on. She then decides it is time for her old war hero to go on another war, and she starts

The fact that Shylock shows no mercy towards Antonio in court shows that he is a man of bad character, but I could not help but feel pity for him after all that has happened to him. Just days before court, Antonio spit on Shylock in a crowd and humiliated him. This opportunity was perhaps the only way for him to seek his revenge. Again, I could not help but feel sympathy towards him because he has now lost everything including his money, stones and most importantly his daughter. To add insult to injury he loses them all to the Christians who so terribly have mistreated him. The fact that he has to convert to Christianity was possibly the biggest blow of all.
I feel as though Shakespeare had intentions to manipulate our feelings toward Shylock throughout the play. He managed to make me hate Shylock and have sympathy for him at the same time. For me it started with the loaning of the money
