Acid Deposition – Alberta’s Electrical
Acid Deposition
Alberta’s electrical needs are met by the combustion of thermal coal. This is how about 90% of electrical power is produced in Alberta. Alberta’s thermal coal is the prime source of Alberta’s electricity but it produces acid rain. Though acid rain is not a significant due to the prevailing winds carrying the exhaust from coal burning plants. There are significant reasons why we should change our electrical powers needs and why we shouldnt.
Alberta’s electrical power needs should be met another way. Due to the thermal combustion of coal, it produces acid rain. Although the acid rain is not severe it can still cause monuments to decay. There are many reason why acid rain can cause birth defects. Acid rain also pollutes rivers that can alternately kill fish. These reasons are few of many reasons why we should not use combustion of thermal coal. In addition; whenever we mine coal, the coal contains a high amount of sulfur. The sulfur is recovered through the process of mining and the cost to remove it is high. Switching to another electrical power source would be a huge economic problem for the Province of Alberta. But when it comes to an environmentalist perspective, finding another source to meet electrical power needs are more practical and more safe for the environment. Also, switching to another way of meeting electrical power needs can also be seen by a political point of view. This being that there are politicians such as The Green Party that would rather an alternate
