Early one morning, during first period, my friend confessed to me her craving for McDonalds, and we decided to go at lunch to quench that craving. After third period, when we met each other and began our trek to Ў§Mickey Dees,ЎЁ my companion began to explain how happy she was all morning because she knew that she will be eating McDonalds very soon. I found it very humorous that the only thing that was getting her through the day was her uncontrollable happiness for the greasy sustenance that she would soon devour. As we became closer to our destination, my friend started to proclaim such things as: Ў§I love McDonalds; McDonaldsЎ¦ so good; IЎ¦d eat McDonalds everyday; Oh My God! I can smell the french fries from here!ЎЁ Although I must agree that those french fries are marvelous, my friendЎ¦s decree of her fixation and love for McDonalds made me wonder if there are many people in the world as deranged and obsessed with fast food as she is. Three main categories of fast food that seem to be a way of life to most Torontonians are pizza franchises, burger joints and coffee chains.
Many people in Toronto would not be able to live without take-out pizza. It would be difficult to find a hand full of people who do not like pizza, because pizza can be manipulated to fit the taste of everyone. Pizza is also affordable, and it sold in individual form, to family packages, to party sizes. Plus, whether it is a pizza franchise (like Pizza Pizza or Pizza Nova) or a small, family-owned, take-out, pizza restaurant (like Pizza Banfi or TerroniЎ¦s), it is never a far walk from home to the neighbourhood pizza place. In conclusion, pizza is accommodating, cheap, convenient, loved by all and down right delicious. This breakfast, lunch and dinner food can be enjoyed alone, with the whole family or at a party. This is why people feel pizza is a necessity.
Burger joints like McDonalds, WendyЎ¦s and Burger King are a need for many people in Toronto. McDonalds especially has an obsessing affect on people. For some reason, specifically McDonalds has an addicting characteristic that people love. This is the cause of great advertising. Ray Kroc (McDonaldsЎ¦ founder) is quoted saying Ў§Look after the customer and business will take care of itself.ЎЁ Kroc uses the concept that Ў§one could sell ice to an Eskimo, if only one could find a selling angle,ЎЁ and apparently, the McDonalds Corporation found that angle long ago. The site Fashion18, a web-site for Canadian teens to talk and learn with other teens, conducted a poll showing that 68% of teens in Canada prefer McDonalds over any other burger franchise in North America. These burger places lure people in with their seductive advertising, convenient locations and affordable prices. It does not help that while teens and children are entranced by the happy meal, parents take advantage of this and use fast food as an easy way to make their family happy and get out of cooking. Teens, not having much money or much time to eat during school, take advantage of the inexpensive combos of a burger franchise for a quick lunch. I know that my best friend takes advantage of Burger KingЎ¦s Whopper Wednesdays because he loves the burgers and they do not even cost him a toonie. I could not say if these burger chains use some addicting chemical in their recipes or if it is the fact that there are thousands
