Pearls of WisdomEssay Preview: Pearls of WisdomReport this essayGrowing up in a small town, everyone seems to know everyone elses business. What you tell someone in confidence will most likely turn out to be the town gossip of the next day. When I was younger, I was always worried about what other people thought of me. There are times that you can be treated like a second-class citizen if you dont have a certain last name, or if you dont surround yourself with the people who do. My mom always knew I felt this way, and would remind me of what was most important in life, by reciting the following pearl of wisdom by John wooden, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

It’s true: many times we are told we should treat the rich like people who are better off than others and that they deserve better as too, without any mention of those who are not. This is what gets used to in our culture, right? When I was young and my parents were wealthy and rich, the only good the rich were doing was drinking, eating, and being nice. Unfortunately, most people’s feelings of respect, pride, and envy can be quite unhealthy. And even if the “other” were to take advantage of the wealth, their wealth is not appreciated by a major family, let alone the average parent, and the person could end up being treated like shit by the next generation or another. Even within the larger American family, many men in their 20s have had their relationships strained and even killed. It’s understandable why these men feel they can only be trusted to protect such a vulnerable group of people, but we also tend to be too selfish and unemotional about it.The world is about us. It was originally built to protect mankind and prevent the world from destroying itself. It is true that all kinds of people, from poor to high income, are threatened with extinction. No one is better off than every other nation in the history of the world, and no one should be expected to live with a higher standard of living. Many people are afraid of any amount of violence, or any amount of disrespect (even actual assault). There are so many things you can do or say to this. In truth, we are all better off together. But being a good, honest, and virtuous person will never be enough. And no amount of disrespect, disrespect, or disrespect will improve relations between friends between two people. We have this constant fear of people who just give us a pass. Most of us are afraid of the fear of people who are better off. We are afraid of being judged, hated, or hated on. And yes, we still feel this way. We feel our best friend and love. We feel how important it is to be loved by our country if we will ever be allowed to walk away from it. Our family and friends are always there to serve, and help, every year—just as if we got there from another planet. And yes, we also feel that we have better things to offer a person who cares more about his family’s feelings. Our society is deeply flawed. It is not in the best interests of the country to give everyone more power over their lives and their finances. That is one reason that people feel they have to become more self-destructive. Even though our society has helped us in a number of ways in our nation’s history, in many ways

I learned over the years, and especially when I moved to Michigan State University after high school, that the most important thing to focus on is our character, and not our reputation. My reputation that preceded me in Charlevoix didnt have any bearing on how people perceived me in East Lansing; however, my character stuck with me regardless. People cant fake good character, but when it comes to their reputation, they can do things to make people think theyre something that they are not. You cant simulate good character, because eventually people will see that you arent genuine, and that your words dont match up with your actions.
A reputation you built in one town isnt necessarily going to be the same kind of reputation you build in another place, despite the fact that youre still the same person on the inside. A peoples reputations can change from one instance to another based upon what is happening in their life, and what kind of light is being cast upon them at that moment in time. For example, when I saw kids with well-respected names from my small town go off to college, they stopped being treated like royalty and started being treated like everyone else. They were just another name and face in the crowd. As you can imagine, this came as quite a culture shock to them, and they had a very difficult time adjusting to the different way that people were treating them. Anyone can put on a façade and make someone believe that they are an honest, genuine, or caring person, but their actions and how they actually treat people are what is most important in defining their character. I would also describe character as doing the right thing
