As the men came through the clearing and near the river, the dogs picked up the smell of Lennie immediately. As soon as they found Lennie, Curly and the other men quickly bound Lennie with hay twine and put him on a horse. As they rode into the farmhouse, Curly kept a gun at Lennies head for every grueling step that felt like and eternity. Lennie was confused. He just wanted to stop her from screaming. Small mindless talk was brought up during the trip across the hot dry grasslands to help break the awkward silence.
When the men paraded across the barnyard with their prize, their trophy, Lennie, George could not watch. It was hard for George to see his best friend, his only true companion to be bound like a dead animal and paraded around. George retreated into the bunkhouse and was quickly joined by Candy. Candy was sad that Lennie had gotten into trouble and now their dream was over. George and Candy were not only worried about their dream, but the fate of their partner. What would Curly do?
The next day the farm was awakened by the innocent cry of Lennie. George went running to the rescue, to find that not saving was possible. Curly was whipping Lennie, like a madman. Lennies eyes looked at George longingly, trying to reach
