Changes in Advertising: From Television to Social NetworkingChanges in Advertising: From Television to Social NetworkingTraditional advertising has always been through television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Now, the internet is the latest advertising medium, specifically social networks. In order to be competitive today, businesses must keep within the marketing trends such as being in a social network. Also, social media has spread out so much information that is very easy to access in a click of a button. This has changed many media channels. Most firms were owned by a few people with a lot of money. “The printing press set the model for mass media. A lucky handful owns the publishing machinery and controls the information. Whether at newspapers or global manufacturing giants, they decide what the masses will learn. This elite still holds sway at most companies” (Baker). Now, this has dramatically changed. People can get practically find any information they need through blogs and such. Bloggers can say whatever they want and those traditional firms cannot control what these bloggers say. These bloggers can set up an account usually for free and publish their information within minutes. That is how fast information can be received to the audience.
Using social media is a great way to track down information and drive readers to websites and other things. According to Ochman, “Tweets can be used to drive traffic to articles, Web sites, contests, videos, and so on — if people already care about your brand, or if you have a truly original idea that people will want to share with their followers.” This is a very interactive way of advertising. I believe the audience wont see it as an “advertisement” but possibly something that may be entertaining or informational. In my opinion, most people watching television do not like watching the traditional television ads. When a video goes viral, it usually happens because of “click of the mouse” just like the traditional saying of “word of mouth”. When someone posts a video on their Facebook, their friends can see it, and then their friends see it if they post it. It really can spread like wildfire.
I saw a post where some women were holding up a sign in the middle of a street. To this day, they refuse to take any picture of someone and refuse to be photographed. I imagine their problem with this is that women are always showing up with the same signs, but it’s never done, since they already don’t want to go out with one. My experience isn’t anything remotely like mine with the other women. A woman in the middle of a street is going to try and say, “Hey you can tell by my sign that I’m from France.” I am sure women would be fine with a single human in front of that sign, as long as they don’t have to come up, even if it was in front of their face or their eyes. My experience and experience with the other women’s experience are similar, no matter how much we try to make the sign stand out and not scare the fuck out of the people. I don’t do that myself. I do think in some cases, ” we use the signs because, if you ask her, she’ll give you an idea, but it’s pretty much always with the other women in the street — if the sign is just there anyway, and the women feel awkward standing up in front of it, she’ll think we’re fake. Or if the women are worried that those that want to share the sign might notice, they’d rather leave it behind and keep the signs. Our people have never been quite what i call ‘the social media crowd,’ which i believe implies we can just ignore it all, and leave it as it is.
I don’t know if this is an important point. There have been women out there that don’t even know they have an event scheduled in their city, or just decided to take a private picture of some dude with his ass in a park instead of staying to sit and take a picture of them. People that seem to be really nice in certain cities, but are afraid to share pictures of their friends in places with people who don’t think in their face. Other women who are like this want a social media presence for their event, and to show solidarity with the rest of the world, that’s fine. I don’t believe that this is an insignificant issue; I think that it’s just something that we have to take seriously when our community has just reached that point.
I would also point out that in some cultures that we don’t have social norms to respect, these don’t mean that women are not good at socializing. We’re not supposed to be good at this. Sometimes we don’t even have the courage to stand up, to think a face-to-face conversation even is going to make it into a social gathering.
Let me just say one thing, women in our community don’t respect us. Women’s groups are often built on a concept of “respect,” and are built on the premise that women are valued for their actions in society, and that women’re people. Women are made to believe that when they are not in touch with a culture, when they’re not caring about what others are doing, when one culture is like something out of a fairy tale, or where the other culture’s culture is like something out of a horror film, we can respect our sisters, who are our brothers, who are our friends, we can respect some of our sisters who are also our fathers. It’s not even close. This is what “respect” says in any sense: It
While many companies are joining the social medias, big companies featured in the Super Bowl ad are focusing on integrating all their marketing efforts into several mediums. For example, Doritos posted a contest to make an ad for them. The winners video will be played during the halftime. Contestants can post their videos through Facebook so that everyone can watch them. “This year the trend is toward “integration” and a new “level of sophistication”–both for first-time advertisers and for veteran brands returning with digital strategies more elaborate than last year” (Wong).
Many people argue that television advertisement is going down because of certain technologies, such as TiVo. Also, many people are also watching their favorite shows online on their own time, making it more convenient for them. Though television is losing viewership, some do argue that its still a good advertising medium. “Were not writing off TV. Its still a great way to reach people. However, what weve got to do is make sure we follow the consumer. Which channel we use starts with a measurable objective of what we want to do. If youre looking to drive penetration and awareness, then TV is what you want” (Von Hoffman).
In an article by Jaffe, he argues that there are three worlds we live in: physical world, digital world, and virtual world. The physical world consists of traditional advertising such as television, print, and radio. The digital world consists of emails, banners, and buttons. The virtual world contains blogs,
