Gatsby a fabulously wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in West Egg in the story tends to be of to himself living life in past and not letting go of it instead thinking that he can bring it back. No one knows where he comes from, what he does, or how he made his fortune. Since Gatsby met Daisy he has never let go of her even though she has started a life of her own, he is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night so Daisy could some how end up there and they could reunite. He still believes if she sees him that she would go back to him as if there hadn’t been a huge gap of time between them. Gatsby made his fortune through criminal activity, because he was willing to do anything to gain the social position he thought was necessary to win Daisy. He even lied to her about his own background in order to convince her that he was good enough for her. He knew that if she found out that Gatsby was born James Gatz on a farm in North Dakota; working for a millionaire made him dedicate his life to the achievement of wealth since he could no longer stand the janitorial job with which he was paying his tuition at St. Olaf’s College after only two weeks.

Tom on the other hand lives every moment to the fullest as soon as it presents itself. He also was powerfully built and from a socially solid old family. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard he demands from those around him. Tom hurts other people and doesn’t think twice about it. He could have prevented both Gatsby
