The Expansion

19th century expansionism was basically Manifest Destiny, a rush to the Pacific. Early in our history we decided that God meant for us to occupy the full width of the continent, even if we had to steal some parts from Mexico and Spain, and buy a big chunk from France who never owned it in the first place. To our generation the Monroe Doctrine meant that the Soviet Union couldnt colonize Cuba or influence politics in Central America, but originally it meant stay out of our way westward!
But the Spanish American War marked the USs emergence as a world power. We started by putting down an insurrection in the Philippines–in fact the S/A War lasted only about three months; the rest of the time was the Philippine Insurrection. Between the S/A War and WWII we intervened in nearly every country in Central America.
After WWII we overthrew a legitimately elected government in Iran. Basically weve had our fingers in every pie since then. We have invaded/bombed/blockaded maybe 50 or 60 times since WWII.
