Women in the Middle East have very hard lives; they can be extremely difficult and unrewarding. In the book “A thousand Splendid Suns”, Mariam and Laila are both women who grow up in the Middle East; they come from different backgrounds, but end up going through parallel situations. Mariam and Laila both endure troublesome and cruel life experiences in their life in similar and different ways. Their approaches towards the situations that are in front of them, even when things are looking grim for, they both are able to find the positives in situations.

Mariam: Has to do the majority of the work around the house because her mother doesnt want to

Mariam: Was a child born because her father had intercourse with one of his servants. Father (Jalil) sent them to live in an isolated house away from town and away from people that would see the “mistake” that Jalil had created. Mother did not think that an education was important for women and their primary duty was to tend to the house
Laila: Born into a normal family with a mother, father, and brothers. She was taught that education was very imprtant
