The life of a first year student: Introduction
To some university is an exciting experience whereas others feel lost and scared. In my first year at university I felt very nervous about going away but excited about leaving home to explore this new higher academic world. Understandably I did experience problems and many challenges in trying to figure out the student lifestyle. Encountering problems as a first year student is inevitable.

Problems faced
It is evident that university campuses are larger than ones typical high school premises. Attempting to find my way around campus was the first problems because for the first couple of weeks I had to familiarize myself with the layout of the campus to avoid by late for my classes as I would be previously. I soon discovered that the method of teaching used in tertiary institutions is far different from what I have experienced in throughout my high school years. Fortunately I did not take too long to adjust to these methods and this resulted in my learning process developing into an enjoyable experience.

The SQ5R as a tool
There are tools that students can use in university to assist them in making their learning experience become more trouble-free and easier. These tools can also make it pleasant for a learning environment and thus encouraging a benefiting occasion for both the student and the lecturer. The SG5R is a very exceptional tool for student to follow. SQ5R is an abbreviation for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Repeat, and Revisit.

The implementation of the SQ5R
According to the Ontario Institute of Technology implementation of the SQ5R can be done as follows:
SURVEY

QUESTION

READING
Read material that has large amounts of text. Look for the answer to your questions as you read.
RECITE
Check your recall of the material even if means saying it out loud .Answer the questions you have formulated and put the material into your own words for better understanding.

RECORD
Record key points using any method of your preference. Highlight key words or phrases; use a tape recorder; use adaptive technology; or write out the points in short form.
