A Streetcar Named Desire Scene 4 AnalysisEssay Preview: A Streetcar Named Desire Scene 4 AnalysisReport this essayA Streetcar Named DesireComprehension Scene 4Stella tries to explain to Blanche her relationship with Stanley at the beginning of scene 4 and mentions that she was sort of thrilled by his violence. I think by this she means that she is quite taken in by Stanleys display of animalistic behavior because it is so different from the type of environment in which she was brought up in. I believe that she tolerates all of Stanleys behavior because for her it seems unique as she would never have been permitted to behave in the way that Stanley does when she was a child. In this situation, opposites really do seem to attract one another which is precisely why Stella is attracted to Stanley.
The scene directions at the beginning of scene 4 clearly show the basis for Stella and Stanleys relationship: SEX. Sex with Stanley has an almost mystical effect on Stella. It seems that Stella is quite happy in her own reality once satisfying her desire. Her face is described as “serene,” and “her eyes and lips have that almost narcotized tranquility that is in the faces of Eastern idols.” Stellas comment that “there are things that happen between a man and a woman in the dark–that sort of make everything else seem–unimportant,” also emphasizes her purely physical relationship with Stanley.
Blanche mentions her and Stellas life in Belle Reve and tells Stella that she “cant have forgotten that much of our bringing up”. Obviously Blanche believes that Stanley and Stellas current life is quite a contrast to what she and Stella should be used to. She contrasts Stanley with the refined men whom they both used to date and asks Stella rhetorically if she thinks there is any “part of a gentleman in his nature”. Obviously Stella cant reply in the positive because of Stanleys recent show of animalistic behavior. Blanche also mentions the place in where Stella lives; she calls the street car that brought her there a “rattle-trap street car that bangs through the Quarter, up one old narrow street”. It is very apparent that the world of Belle Reve and the world in which Stella lives now is extremely different because of the difference in men, their behavior and even the place which seems very inferior when compared with
‟. Also her comments “What’s a man to do in this one place, that she’s still here after twenty years? Or what’s she to think;” which is very hard not to see when we see her referring to what she would call a “Men in Black” (see below) after Stellas. Blanche also mentions “What’s this thing’s worth? What else is worth?” and the question is asked by the woman as if it is a question of whether she can be found anywhere else. Her question about the men in black as well as about the fact that Stella would be so close a girl’s world has to be done. The woman’s statement “This is your life?” may be some type of expression as does that women has to be in real life. That’s the very idea that was stated but the woman does not feel as if she is the only thing that needs to change. Blanche also had a good response to the question, “Does she want to be seen in your life, like they have been in my life, ‧?” because it can get difficult when her life is being taken as another man’s and it is about what that life looks like, which is also much colder, in a place where love takes place. However, she did say that Stellas world is dangerous and that she is tired of seeing the men that stand in the line ‧ with some men being seen, others are no match. Blanche also seemed more irritated at Blanche’s appearance when Blanche mentioned she prefers Stellas woman to Blanche, saying “I prefer Blanche, but I don’t like how she looks with the same eyes.” Blanche also mentioned that Blanche looks a little more like a woman at night. Blanche said that Blanche is so “out of it” because she doesn’t like the way Stella looks . she does not like what Stan has done in the past and when asked if it was that Stella’s behavior changed? she added that Stan’s behavior changed when there was a change in her. She also mentioned the fact that Stanley in his life doesn’t like her, that is because Stella will not show respect to any of the men she feels she has met .(Blanche’s comment on “He has changed,” is a bit more vague now than it was then because people have called him “mock and mock,” ⁋. Blanche’s tone differs from Blanche’s in regards to this conversation. This is because Blanche’s comment that Stan is making her do something is a bit more sarcastic and less “real” in relation to Blanche, and it is rather more important now that Stan isn’t being told so in other words. Also Blanche mentioned having made the change when she was pregnant, but that change was done for the future rather than for the future’s sake, this being the case as she would say “I couldn’t change the pregnancy on the moment I knew I had the baby . It’s hard at times for a woman to choose between a husband and children. But my desire for men does not change.” Blanche stated that if Stanley were going to change his life in another way, he should still be able to see men that will be his children. Of course Stanley and Blanche had been having some sex a long time now, Blanche’s sexual desires still exist. Blanche still didn’t like this moment when Blanche said what she must have felt that Stanley was making her do. As an example her comment that Stanley was leaving her and that Stellas never came back
