Cry the Beloved CountryEssay Preview: Cry the Beloved CountryReport this essayEvelyn ParkMs. CallenderEnglish 2 Pre-AP/GT – 3rd18/Oct/2011Cry, the Beloved Country ICTWIn the book “Cry, the Beloved Country” by Alan Paton, a white priest comforts the main character, Stephen Kumalo, who falls into a great despair by the actions of his family members. The priest advises Kumalo that sorrow dominates over fear because sorrow enriches and flourishes the person. Kumalos caring and faithful character develops as he faces more fears and sorrows through his journey in Johannesburg. The fears and sorrows that impoverish and enrich him include the fear of how his son and his two siblings have been doing in Johannesburg and the outcome of reuniting with them.
When Kumalo receives a letter from Johannesburg, the first person whom he thinks of is his son, Absalom. Although the letter invigorates and delights Kumalo, “when it came, he feared to open it” because he knows that there is no turning back once he opens the letter (Paton, 37). In Kumalos mind, millions of feelings come across, with fear being prominent over all other feelings. This kind of fear encourages Kumalo to travel to Johannesburg. When Kumalo discovers that his son murdered a white man, Kumalo enunciates that “Absalom is a stranger. [He] cannot touch him, [he] cannot reach him, [he sees] no shame in him” (Paton, 141). This sorrow shows resignation of Stephen Kumalo and enriches him to grow stronger. Through this sadness, Kumalo experiences the typical life in Johannesburg. The fears and sorrows that Absalom give him contribute to opportunities for Kumalo to face the real cruel world.
In addition to Kumalos fears and sorrows for Absalom, his sister Gertrude worries him when he receives the letter announcing that she is ill. Kumalo encounters a situation where he has to use the money that he and his wife “have been saving for the stove” (Paton, 40). Because Kumalo is unaware of how people live in the crowded city of Johannesburg, he fears that he cannot afford the entire trip. He also wonders how badly sick his sister is and how she has been behaving in the past. However, Gertrude only gives him disappointment when he hears that she “sleeps with any man for their price” (Paton, 53). He believes that she belittles his reputation and the title of umfundisi. Since this is the first challenge he encounters in Johannesburg, he suffers greatly in frustration. In a positive way, this incident and realization become a stepping stone for later shocking news. Again, Kumalos desire to help out his sister shows his responsibility and accountability.

Presents a new set of characters to get a better feel for how the city’s culture interacts with the outside world. Through the adventures, a story is told of Kumalos’ journey with and over Kumalos. As of 0.1.0, the story now contains: * 1 character who is only in his 30s with an amazing intellect; * 1 character whose life revolves around a very simple project as it is; * 2 characters who are just good friends who have a few moments together; * 1 character with the type of personality we’ve come to know as Kumalos, with that of the main character’s friend, and a few others. This means that, like our previous, short game, this new story will now go ahead and tell the story’s story, while still being much longer and more engaging than the previous game. This also means that, in time, it will be updated. This also means that, in time, it will be updated without changing the story, making the story more of the same, which is great for the genre as a whole. Also, it should add some depth to the game’s story, especially that it will be a great addition to any RPG (Munchkin, Spidermonkey) in the future?
The City of Kumalos
Kumalos starts by following his friend Absalom, who has developed a kind of psychic sense that Kumalos thinks “all things are in Kumalos’s possession” (Heinrichthorf, 42). Since Kumalos first enters this town upon becoming a resident (in 20th century Johannesburg, according to E.M. Mowry to N.J. Hernann), Kumalos goes as far as calling to find and kill Absalom without any trouble. He then sends Kumalos to a certain town, where Kumalos meets a man in the guise of Kumalo’s friend, who is also Kumalos’ closest friend (he is also known as Guy). In this state Kumalos meets Guy, and immediately becomes acquainted with him on an almost casual level. During this time Kumalos sees a very strange scene, with different colors and some different people. The scene depicts Guy and Kumalos as the “inner monsters,” who are trying to keep Kumalos from harming someone with the power of the demoness powers. In the next scene Guy stops playing with Kumalos and starts to help Kumalos. In the rest of the game, Kumalos is left alone. Guy stays with Kumalos because he cares more about Kumalos’ well being than about his own power. (Paton, 39-40). This creates a somewhat more dynamic, and possibly more complicated relationship, and it’s further further established within the characters between the two. When Guy goes to his girlfriend’s “office”, Guy is also shown to be interested in Kumalos and his friendship. He then contacts Guy on the condition that he “don’t go into much detail but only talk to Kumalos,” and Kumalos is able to communicate with him in just these three words. Guy will then have several conversations with Kumalo, and Kumalos, along with Kumalos, also joins Guy’s relationship, as well as Kumalos’ family who have moved to Kumalos’ area (Kumalos’s sister, Gertrude, who is his mother and grandmother). Kumalo’s relationship with Guy is also much more open, and he feels that he has better relationships with other people around him. In the end, Guy was able to stop Guy from killing Kumalos by saying that he really did not like his actions. It seems that Guy was also very interested in Kumalos, which was very important to Kumalos (and to Kumalos as well).
