As a customer service manager for a local software development company, I will find the three steps of the technical writing process to be very useful as I create a user manual for a new software application that my company is developing.
Since this manual will be used to support the clients who purchase the new software, it is imperative that it would contain accurate and detailed information. Much of this information will be troubleshooting tips and solutions and this is where the first step of the technical writing process will come into play right away.
The first step of the technical writing process is the prewriting phase. The prewriting phase allows the author to gather any and all pertinent information that would be helpful in the writing process. This gathering of information will be especially important from a technical standpoint because the typical reader of such a manual will probably need very detailed information in order to use the software successfully.
The prewriting process will cover all areas of the manual and will provide a more clear idea of how the manual should be put together, as well as what information it should contain. A technical document of this sort will need to be very technical itself due to the nature of the software that it will accompany.
The second step of the technical writing process will be the writing process. This step is vital to the success of the document because every manual needs to have something written in it to accompany any illustrations, or it cannot be beneficial. This step follows the prewriting step because after all related information has been gathered in the prewriting phase, it is necessary to begin putting all this information and data together to form an organized manual that will be useful to the client. The quality of the manual often portrays the quality of the item that accompanies it, so it is vital that all applicable information
