Throughout the novel ‘The Story Of Tom Brennan’ Burke cleverly employs an enormous amount of changes as a result of one tragic event. The event involves universally known themes which are teen drinking and driving. She enhances the insight on the consequences of moving into the world and the requirement of courage to overcome internal and external barriers through basing the novel on a narrative voice of the protagonist, Tom Brennan. This is portrayed when leaves his home and moves to a new unfamiliar town due to the situation his family encountered. This is conveyed through ‘closed the front door of our home for the last time’. This very symbolic gesture exemplifies the transition from their previous life in Mumbilli to the journey towards the town of Coghill. The closing of the door symbolises the devastation the accident has had upon the family, forcing them to adapt to change and voyage on the pathway available to them. As a result, leaving the responder with the thought that the Brennan family is forcibly leaving the town due to a negative incident.
