The abuse teachers take from students is unbearable. Teachers have been beaten, stabbed, and shot by students since the early 1990s. With the abuse teachers are taking from students, they should have the right to protect themselves against the attacks. In recent years there have been attempts to ban guns in America, but all attempts have failed. Today teachers should have the right to carry a weapon in school for their own protection.
A quick search, of the internet, reveals some disturbing cases about teachers being attacked by violent students. According to Rock legend, pro-hunting, and Second Amendment activist, Ted Nugent, “their (students) punishment rarely fits their very serious crimes, including murder, rape, first-degree assault and more” (Nugent P.2). If thats the case, these students need to be harshly punished for their actions. These students are thinking that since theyre not being seriously punished, they can get anything they want. This shouldnt happen, something needs to be done. Allowing teachers to arm themselves may provide just the right deterrent to students.
One thing that needs to be done is that there needs to be a law passed that will allow teachers to carry weapons in school. These weapons dont have to be lethal; they can be non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray or a taser. If a student starts assaulting a teacher, they can easily defend themselves. According to Nugent, “teachers should not have to be forced to become victims because they are unarmed” (Nugent P.1). Teachers are here to teach, not to become victims of student attacks.
Another thing that should be done, students should receive serious time for attacking teachers. Students should automatically receive long term suspension (180 days), along with having to pay for any medical bills incurred because of the attack. Mandatory community service might also serve as punishment. Today students have attacked teachers and gotten away with it. Have you ever heard of a teacher attacking a student? Its very unlikely since there have been more students attacking than students defending themselves.
According to the people against me, they believe that arming teachers will not reduce violence in schools. But I agree with Nugent, “teachers should not have to be forced to become victims because they are unarmed” (Nugent
