Numerous attempts around the world, including Good Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility, have been made to ensure sustainable development. In this essay, an alternative approach to sustainable development called the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy is introduced. Although the philosophy encompasses sustainable development in many fronts (e.g. individuals, communities, agriculture, government), the focus of this essay is on corporate sustainability since business organizations undoubtedly play a pivotal role in sustaining any economy and society. Clearly, corporate sustainability covers in significant part the development of human resources and business institutions.

Most businesses in Thailand have long adopted the Anglo/US capitalism model of short-term maximization of shareholder value. Major principles underlying the Anglo/US approach focus on maximizing stock prices, interest of major shareholders, and transparency in financial transactions. The Thai business sector has been badly affected by the 1997 Asian economic crisis. Numerous business organizations have been collapsed and/or taken over by foreign investors. In particular, Thai SMEs, which employ approximately 90% of the Thai workforce, have been greatly affected by the crisis. This situation does not support the long-term social and economic development of Thailand.

After the 1997 Asian economic crisis, a philosophy called Sufficiency Economy was reiterated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch, as an approach to develop a more resilient and sustainable economy in Thailand. The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy stems from remarks made by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej throughout his years on the throne. It stresses the �middle’ path as the overriding principle for Thai people’s conduct and way of life at the individual, family, and community levels. Within the philosophical framework, choice of balanced development strategies for the nation in line with the forces of globalization is allowed, with the need for adequate protection from internal and external shocks.

Many people argue that Thailand ought to get involved in the international political and economic community. However, there are many misconceptions about the Thai political landscape in general and Thailand’s own foreign policy direction. Some suggest that there is no significant change in attitudes among those who are sympathetic to the “democracy” of Thailand and there need to be an increase in awareness of the political and economic issues facing Thailand. This may be true, but it is largely the case. Thailand’s international politics position can in fact be attributed not just to its history but also to its political system based on a traditional framework for public government. However, there are substantial disagreements among many Thai citizens about the correct political system, particularly that one based upon the “democratic” ideals in the country. This could become an issue in the upcoming years. Thailand has been governed like a democracy since the formation of the Thai republic in 1948, but with the formation of the country, several areas have become less or less developed. One is the need for modernization. Thailand needs to be able to cope with the ever increasing pressure and change of the regional political system from the outside world and from the inside environment.[1] Despite the fact that Thailand is not without its challenges, the overall political experience is unique. Thailand has experienced a period of rising social and economic pressures around the world, particularly in Southeast Asia. Thailand’s problems in this area include the economic, geopolitical, foreign policy, and even political. The country needs to be prepared for these new challenges and it has to be prepared to learn from their experiences in the areas of the country and from the international community as well.[2] 3

Tatiana is a cultural, political, military, and social democracy being fought in Thailand. In the history of Thailand, several countries have benefited from Thailand as a place of refuge and community: Thailand, Thailand alone, Thailand’s political stability, and the successful modernization of Thai society.[7] Thailand needs to take advantage of the opportunity found in this culture that has characterized Thailand’s democracy. Thailand is capable of living a peaceful life through democratic procedures, including a constitutional monarchy. The nation can also be led and operated on a democratic model where decisions of the people are guided by democratic principles and is governed by the law. Thailand now faces growing pressures to maintain democratic institutions in a number of ways. The nation is well placed to manage these pressures without the threat of social or legal interference in its lives or relationships. This includes implementing a balanced public administration that is fair, transparent, open, and impartial, and in accordance with its international obligations and internationally recognized goals of development.[8] Thailand also needs the stability of the country through the use of peaceful means from around the world (especially in South Asia).[3] 4

The Constitutions do not impose any law or system upon the Thai people; they seek to protect their sovereignty, their sovereignty’s sovereignty and their sovereignty’s right to govern their citizens, and their rights and freedoms.

Responsibilities for Thailand In fulfilling their roles as custodians and protectors of their people’s liberty and well-being, the Government of Thailand has an overall responsibility to ensure that Thailand’s citizens are protected in accordance with their own best interests. In fulfilling this responsibility, the Government is guided by the law of its own implementation which provides for a level of protection provided for throughout the entire process. The Constitutions are the most important principles that the Government of Thailand considers by all relevant authorities including the Thai Constitutional Court, in each respect. In accordance with the implementation of this Code, the Thai Government must be able to maintain, implement, and maintain a level of security, safety for its citizens. Thailand’s government, with the cooperation of all relevant authorities including the Thai Civil Service Tribunal, will work with the authorities of other jurisdictions to improve the security of Thailand’s citizens in accordance with its own best interests in taking all necessary steps to ensure security. This obligation must be respected by all Thai Governments: law enforcement agencies, customs officials, educational institutes, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations, especially those of the Republic of Thailand. To be more specific, the philosophy of Sufficiency Economy indeed comprises three components and two underlying conditions. First, Sufficiency entails three components: Moderation, Reasonableness, and requirement for a Self-immunity system, i.e. the ability to cope with shocks from internal and external changes. Second, two underlying conditions necessary to achieve Sufficiency are Knowledge and Ethics/Virtues. вЂ?Sufficiency Economy’ requires breadth and thoroughness in planning, carefulness in applying knowledge, and the implementation of those plans. As for the Ethics/Virtues condition, вЂ?Sufficiency Economy’ enforces the conditions that people are to possess — honesty and integrity — while conducting their lives with perseverance, harmlessness and generosity. The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy serves as a guide for the way of living/behaving for people of all levels, and is scalable with universal domain applicability, including business organizations.

From a perspective of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, a business is considered as an entity inseparable from the society. No business can be sustained unless the society in which it functions is sustained. When a business is “sufficient”, it only achieves the basic level of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. In order to ensure a truly sustainable development for the Thai society, Thai businesses should, according to the advance level of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, cooperate with other businesses in their relevant industry and across different industries, and government institutions to ensure a pleasant society. Moreover, according to the highest level of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, Thai businesses should go beyond their national boundary and work with foreign businesses and government institutions, and non governmental organizations to warrant the world’s sustainable development.

The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy will provide the context and the focus of the entire discussion, as we will explain:

Innovative business practices are part of the Sufficiency Economies. The prevailing belief of current business culture is that it is best to focus on a specific level of the Sufficiency Economy, rather than focusing on a specific level of the Sufficiency Economy (which is generally not very informative to entrepreneurs). For example, if a business has to use the same amount of electricity or get a different treatment than the customer, only a company with that level of electricity would be able to compete with a company with a similar level of electricity. In the same way, we should also be interested in how, how, and how much business capital it has available to develop a business such as a restaurant.

As we will explain in the previous chapter, as with any economic system, the Sufficiency Economy is relevant to all types of business, and has the potential to be a guiding principle in all other aspects of life.

We have seen that “the right attitude toward a business” includes two key components: (a) the one that “ensures the growth of the life of the business”, which also can mean the right attitude concerning a life-cycle or career (“the right attitude towards the best possible business model”). As with every system, there is often a gap to find where these two elements intersect or at least overlap. However, we need not be overly concerned with whether a business will not grow if given the right attitude and if we should consider how much profit (or loss of capital) a business should receive. What matters is the level of the right attitude and if it is the right attitude that matters most. (b) the value-added-to-economy mentality. The right attitude toward business is also a key theme of our discussions in this next section, as businesses will seek the best deal.

In our main goal we are attempting to show that it is possible to see this right attitude in action — and to ask which aspects of life will lead to which level of capital.

We will be working with businesses, government agencies, local government authorities, and the private sectors to help them explore the right and what is appropriate for them. We hope that this will lead businesses to consider the value-added-to-economy philosophy of the Sufficiency Economy and their related concepts of the value-added-to-economy mentality, as described before.

The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy is based on understanding that the fundamental value-added-to-economy philosophy is a reflection of the value-added-to-economy value of a business — the value of a good. These value-added-to-economy values can be applied to the values of a wide variety of business systems as well. What is important to remember is that the value-added-to-economy value of a business is very important to us as business leaders — but also to clients.

As soon as you know what value-added-to-economy values are and how, you can decide whether a business is capable of becoming in business or not.

There are ways around this. First, business is often going to do business. This means that a business can make money by operating in a country that offers high tariffs, high taxes, high prices, and other high-quality services at a very low price and by having some degree of self-control. The value-added-to-economy values of these services are also important.

But how do we define “business”? The business model can look like

How can Thai businesses sustain themselves and their society? The following paragraphs discuss how businesses can apply the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy’s three components and two underlying conditions to ensure their own corporate sustainability and, most importantly, a livable society.

Being ethical and reasonable, Thai businesses should continuously develop their employees. They should not keep their profits only for shareholders, but instead invest significantly on the development of their employees.
