AutisticSymptoms of a classic case of autism include: no speech, poor eye contact, tantrums, appearance of deafness, no interest in people, and constantly staring off into space. Autism is regarded as an early childhood disorder. It is a disorder of speech, communication, social interaction, and repetitive type compulsive behavior. In itself, autism is a very difficult disorder to diagnose. There is no definite blood test or brain scans that give an accurate diagnosis. Diagnoses are based strictly on observed behavior, making it not the most accurate diagnosis. It is most likely a genetic disorder, but not one that can, as of yet, be tested for.

Autism is primarily a cognitive disorder. The definition of cognitive has to do with thinking. Cognitive psychologists put it, autistic people lack “theory of mind”. Maybe what they lack in one area, they make up for in another. Just like in the case of a blind man. A blind man has no visual abilities, but a blind mans hearing senses double and triples to make up for the sense that he lacks. The nervous system has a remarkable ability to compensate when it has been damaged. This could, very well, be the case here. We should research the mystery of autistic peoples unusual ability to excel at visual spatial skills. Also, study the connection between their superior visual skills and their poor verbal skills.

Lorenne Toussaint is a Canadian, researcher, and author of several books including “Understanding Autistic Language” and “Autist Speakers: How We Can Help People with Autism”. Laurie Toussaint writes as: I’m part of the Autist Speakers Initiative (ASI) in Ottawa-Dakota, Canada. I’ve been teaching myself and others in all walks of life from kindergarten – the young and old. In order to be there I’m constantly in discussions about my experiences of autism. I’m interested in seeing how much we can be taught. We’re learning this, and I think it’s worth sharing that I’m trying to teach myself about the issues that cause people with autism – what makes us a different human, how to become an autistic, what it means to be a speaker, how it’s possible to do a better job and teach others. The Autism Speakers Initiative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of developmental, genetic, and neurologic diseases and disabilities. I was recently awarded the Distinguished Prize for Autism Research in the Canadian Autism Society. Please join me for a week, October 17, 2015, to learn more about ASI. About the Autism Speakers Initiative

As an educator, a teacher, and a social worker on the Autism Speaks program, I’ve been lucky enough to be able help two autistic people.

My first child, Zachary, has special needs, and has had a terrible year. His mother has been diagnosed with a condition called Down syndrome, meaning that she couldn’t walk. I was born with Down syndrome a quarter of the time. My second child, Ethan, has autism with special needs, and he can’t walk. His father has autism with speech difficulties.

As an autism specialist with ASI, I have witnessed firsthand the impact that speech can have on our abilities. I was introduced to his autistic features when he was 16 years old: he can speak, speak and read clearly. By age 16 he understood that it was no big deal to be able to talk and speak as a person. While he could not speak as a young child, he was able to say and do things that no child can do as they grow up. He understands that it may take some time to develop these abilities, but he will be able to speak his best, and the language becomes more and more normal. And the ability to express words has really been improving.

I’m also one of a number of people who have benefited from the Autism Speaks program; you get to tell stories with other people who have been affected by the condition or are still suffering through it. I hope that many of those stories

The autistic view on certain things is so different from ours that there is much to be gained from studying it. After all, arent we supposed to learn from each others differences? We should put forth the effort to consider this new,
