Reading the article “Shared Talking Styles Herald New and Lasting Romance”, gave me some insight on how communicating and the way our language style matches up with one another can almost predict how well our relationship with a significant other is. Taking the language style matching test proved to be a little inaccurate for me, it had me at slightly below average. I can say that my girlfriend and I do not have the same language style but it does not seem to damper our relationship, not does it tend to lead to any miscommunications all that often.
The two researches in the article “Shared Talking Styles Herald New and Lasting Romance,” graduate student Molly Ireland and psychologist James Pennebaker, both of the University of Texas at Austin, state that function words–such as pronouns, articles, conjunctions, prepositions and negations–augurs well for mutual romantic interest and stable relationships. I agree with the two of them on this, while reading this article I thought of some of my past relationships and how our talking styles were. In most my relationships it seems that I have had a somewhat different style than my partner, although I wouldnt go so far as saying we were complete opposites.
Psychologist James Pennebaker says “If you just click with somebody but cant put a finger on why, theres a fair chance that high language-style matching is going on”. I can remember a few years back when this did happen to me, I was simply infatuated with this woman and I had no idea why. She was not the type of person that I was usually attracted to so that made it even harder for me to understand as to why I was so infatuated with her. We later talked about and both could not come to any conclusion as to why we were so attracted to each other, we did get into a relationship for a few months and it was great and we communicated wonderfully. Thinking back now, I can say that I really do believe we had the same language style. The only reason we ended the relationship was because she was moving across the country to be closer with her family as her parents heath was not so good. I wonder if this language style could really turn out to be in fact true.
The language style matching test seemed to be a little inaccurate for me, but in all honestly I entered a few text messages and it did not meet the 50 word minimum requirement so my final score of .79 was below the average of .84. As I stated before my girlfriend and I do not have the same language style, we have a wonderful relationship and have our miscommunications as would any other relationship but never any that tend to bring us to the argumentative state of mind.
I think there are too many factors that go into a relationship to believe that matching language styles is a thorough way to predict the quality of interpersonal relationships. Communication is very important when it comes to relationships, but
