Is Bottled Water A Safer, Healthier and Convenient Alternative?
Today most Americans are switching from drinking tap water to drinking bottled water. The number of people who drink bottled water has been rising. In the article, “Defying The Nalgene” by Zak Moore, points out some reasons why drinking bottled water is not as bad as it has been told to us. He says “Well, Aquafina tastes the best to me, and not only is it bottled in compliance with various specifications by the government, but there is also the more reassuring market quality control of reputation.” I agree with Moore because for me most of the bottled water tastes a lot better compared to some tap water, and is a safer, healthier and convenient alternative product that consumers use because it is an excellent way to stay hydrated.
Bottled water is a safer alternative. When I moved to Boston from Haverhill, I was concerned about the Boston water safety. I decided to do some research to be sure that the tap water was complying with the government regulations. In my research for the safety and quality of the water, I read an article from the Environmental Working Group that says “Americans have good reason to worry about the safety of the drinking water that flows from their taps, according to the results of a 3-year investigation by the Environmental Working Group (EWG 2009). EWG assembled an extraordinary database of 20 million drinking water quality tests performed by water utilities since 2004. It reveals a total of 316 contaminants in water supplied to 256 million Americans in 48,000 communities in 45 states including Boston. Among the contaminants were 202 chemicals that are not subject to any government regulation or safety standards (EWG 2009). EPAs (Environmental Protection Agency) failure to establish effective source water protection programs and to develop enforceable standards for scores of other contaminants leaves
