The teachings of the ministry of Jesus were simple and broke away from the tightly held presuppositions of traditional Hebrew orthodoxy and held them to higher standards. While certainly believing in the monotheistic tradition of Judaism, he preached a message that one receives blessings not in the form of material wealth, but if one lives charitably and compassionately he will be blessed with eternal life in “the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus was a teacher whose mission was to adhere to Hebrew law and fulfill the teachings of the prophets and to lead by example to the people of his time that in order to fulfill the laws and the prophets, one must live charitably, benevolently, and compassionately. This was a radical new direction of thought that spread among the lower echelons of Hebrew society. Jesus taught that material wealth was not a divine blessing and that you should “not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (MT 6:19 KJV) meaning that we should not be concerned with the attachments we have in this world because they will all ultimately go away, but an eternity with God awaits us after death. This is our ultimate reward and it one can fulfill all holy commandments by simply loving God, and loving ones neighbor. And not only should one love their neighbor, but also their enemy as well- so no more exterminating Canaanites and Philistines. He emphasized practice of these principles over worship and theology and preached that they should be practiced humbly and in secret (like praying, for example) and not flaunted in the streets and synagogues. Jesus had a great many things to say but ultimately his teachings can summed up in Matthew 7:12, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
