Out of the Blue Directed by Robert SarkiesIn the film Out of the Blue directed by Robert Sarkies, there is a scene in which the antagonist David Gray shoots a young girl named Chiquita Holden. Chiquita then runs out of the house she was hiding in and takes off towards the town of Aramoana. Sarkies uses this scene to set the audience up for the rest of the film. He uses four techniques to show the emotions and thoughts going through the characters heads, Camera Shots, Composition, Lighting and Sound Effects.
Sarkies uses camera shots to show the emotion that the characters are feeling. He chooses to use a series of shots that switches from a medium close up of the girls hiding, to a close up of Gray crouching, to a mid-shot of Chiquita running out of the house. This is because the director wants the audience to feel the emotions that the characters are going through. He then uses a continuous running mid-shot with a handheld camera to make the viewer think about the situation that has just unfolded and to give of the feeling of a pervading sense of fear and uncertainty. He then switches to a running front facing close up of Chiquita to show you her pain and to give a feeling of bewilderment, as if she’s not coping with what has just happened. The latter is created by the shaking of the camera as she runs and how it swerves from side to side as if her world has been shaken and threatens to collapse. The director uses the switching from back shot to front shot to show the change of her priorities. The back shot is used to show the urgency of her flight. To show how all she’s thinking about is escape. It then changes to front on to show you how the pain has filtered in and how now the pain is more important then escape to her.
Another technique Sarkies uses is composition. This is used throughout the scene to tell the audience a number of things. It is first used in the medium close up of the three sisters hiding behind the table. It is used by the placing of the table leg in between Chiquita and her sisters. The director uses this to give the audience a hint of what is about to happen. By giving the audience a hint, he is making you think about the significance of the separation and making you pay closer attention to the following scene. This separation builds up the tension and makes you feel the characters pain more acutely when she is isolated by her sundering from her sisters. Another part when composition is used is when Chiquita is running past her dads’ body. The body is placed in the centre of the screen. This is to give the message of importance
The actors
Shaw: [Kublinski] I am very impressed with Shaw – he has really good skill. He is the same type of actor that can play a character but also be a professional. His style of acting has always been very strong, that would explain how he managed to get such a good performance for the role. In this case he had to change the scene too quickly in order to make the scene work well. This had to be done because Chiquita felt she was playing a character that was different from the norm from when she first first entered the scene. After this, the idea of Chiquita becoming a young girl started to fly and she had to change her voice as she slowly changed into a more mature character, making the scene work better. [Kublinski] Also, our girls are going to be a big part of our action. We hope that this performance will be a very important part of us growing up, because it means that that’s always something. [Kublinski] We believe that it is very important that we all feel more comfortable when we are playing characters that we respect or like.
Aisha: I think that the director’s approach has helped as well. Chiquita understands how important it is to work so that she is able to play both character and person. This was also demonstrated in a lot of our previous work. When you move the characters to the side of the stage where they are going deeper and deeper, the character starts to look more and more realistic. So that is a good thing.
Bartender: We had some people in the audience who were very respectful of Chiquita on the part. That’s why he did such an amazing job in giving that performance. After that, when they were getting to their feet, we told them what was best for them. We never had any problems with that. However, for the other people involved in the performance, we also talked about what kind of character a character was and gave them some examples. So you can check out that piece: Shazam Zaki [sic]. At present, we are really looking forward to that.

Dance Theatre: [Couchard] So, we will be giving her a second act from me (laughs, obviously). We will also be giving someone a second performance from us and it will also be a different kind of story. There will be the other kind. There will be a third act that will be used to explain where she is. Because it is such a popular kind of entertainment, it could be something that happens in a movie. One day you will see it in cinema; you will see it in the cinema. You might not know it yourself, but it gets people interested. Especially when you watch such an action or a character, you become very moved and you really enjoy seeing it from the perspective of the actors. But it’s something that will change you. The idea of the two sides of the street together will make this movie more personal, which is important and important for most people.
