Personal Motivation
There have been numerous motivational theories developed over the years and used in the workplace to establish and maintain a healthy and strong work environment for all employees. Researchers have proved that motivation is a psychological process that helps you play in the competitive environment and hence makes you work more toward your goals (Mine, Ebrahimi, and Wachtel, 1995). The employees are the most valued asset of any company and for the company to be truly successful; the employees must be positively motivated to be as successful as possible while attaining their goals. This paper will examine two professional situations; one where I was motivated and another where I was not motivated.
De-Motivational Situation:
Researchers have found that the process of motivation and the job satisfaction among the employees comes across the nature of the employees and their temperament toward the work. (House, Shane, & Herold, 1996). Within the information and technology field the talent, skillsets, and experience that one possess is recognized and counted towards qualifications for positions, promotion, and even salary. However; this criteria can be at times disregarded when individuals are put into positions or compensated more based on whom he or she knows or other influences and not based on actual qualifications and experiences. A scenario such as this can be a demotivating factor to any employee, especially one who has invested the time, dedication, and loyalty in order to rewarded with a position or compensation that he or she is more qualified for. I have previously been in similar predicament and the fact that a new employee is hired with the less skills, experience and qualifications but reaps the rewards of a higher pay is very frustrating situation. This experience provided no sense of motivation for me as it was a position I felt I was more qualified for. Furthermore; being able to speak more on the tasks affiliated with the position than the actual individual hired for the position did nothing more to ease my temperament towards my job. My motivation to complete assigned tasks and to work towards goals was no longer a priority. However; overtime I realized that my accomplishments were noted, my skills and qualifications spoke for themselves and that my day of recognition would not be far behind.
By my hard work I am standing at the point Maslows Hierarchy of self-esteem ladder. I will continue to work hard and forget about the bad situations; or de-motivational situation in this case and will pave my own successful way to have a bright future
Motivational Situation:
The field of information technology can be very unpredictable and is constantly changing and challenging. Anyone in the IT field will always be in a learning phase as newer technology, methodologies, and protocols continue to emerge. As an employee in this field; I am always encouraged by myself and my company to remain proficient with current technology and to improve on or learn the skills required to utilize newer emerging technology.
Within my organization; there are opportunities for growth and promotion. Employees are encouraged to continuously work as hard as possible to enrich their skills to meet the criteria for positions at a higher level. The opportunity of on the job training, mentorship programs or attend training to improve individuals skills motivates everyone to make good use of the available
