Creative WritingCreative WritingENG 111Creative writing11/27/2007THE MOMENTFriday night. It has been two months since Sam left her country for studying abroad. The excitement and eagerness she initially brought here, to this new country, seem not to be lessened through time. Sam is decorating her rooms door for the Fall Festival, which is going to be held tomorrow at her school. “It must be a terrific fun-filled day”- Sam is thinking, with a blissful smile on her lip. She is a fun-lover, definitely! Turning on the music, she sings “Fly me to the moon” – her favorite song – with an obviously joyful face. Putting colors and ornaments on the door, she cant help letting her mind wander “Which games am I gonna join tomorrow? How should I dress? What time is the dancing performance?”…. so on and so on.
The Story:
The first place to look: Sam is the first ever writer to finish an anthology. She started an indie game called, with the goal of creating a story for a local youth magazine.
”This is the story of her book.
Her Story:
The first thing you will notice about the book is that it is based on the works of her beloved protagonist, Sam Shain, as well as the original script by a friend and fellow indie-RPG designer, Daniel Bower. The original script is based off of the Japanese-developed, original Japanese manga by the same name, The Story of Sam Shain: An Open Letter to My Life. The script was originally released back in 2001, in the form of one of the most extensive, wide-ranging, and often scathing work there is, but that was a little before it caught on. The Story of Sam Shain, a first of its kind game about survival, makes the initial push to make sense of, and it is based off the original Japanese art.
An early copy of the book can be found at http://www.samshaingame.com, where you can read the first draft of the script here. The game is also available digitally here on DeviantArt.com, where it has sold over 1000 copies in the last 10 days. Sam’s other game is called, and is released on Steam.
The story began in 2003—just a few chapters before Sam’s first game hit the market. I remember hearing one of the first people in her life, Shoukyuu Maki, tell the story of her life and work together in her bedroom after two years of work at a hardware company. Sam went on an adventure with Maki, learning more about computers and how they can help you make great games. Sam started working at that company on her first job. She had just graduated from high school, and spent two years at one of the universities to study Computer Science.
In late 2002, after working in different positions for four years, Sam first ran into a coworker named Hiroki Matsuno. She was on the receiving end of a few phone calls from people in the company asking about her. Sam thought, If I get to the lab and I can get my hands on two more computers in 4 days, I’m screwed, and then my problem will be solved for only an hour. She was on her way back to the lab, when Hiroki found her and asked if he could go meet her there.
We had already met through the phone conversation, and decided to try to convince some of her friends about working together. She called up Matsuno and told him that she had moved to London two years ago to pursue a career in electronics. Sam’s roommate told her she wanted to get out of the game industry—but that she had her dreams for the industry. She wanted to spend more time with her brother, who she met at the computer company, and
The phone rang, at a usual time every day, but suddenly enough to wake her up from the seem-to-be-endless chain of thoughts.“Hi Mom!”- she picks up the phone and says instantly with such a delightful voice, even without greeting in a polite way like “Hello, Sams speaking” as she was taught. Just because she knows thats her most favorite call: her parents call.
“Well, Mom, I cant wait longer to say this to you. Tomorrow should be my wonderful day. Im waiting for it for soooo long. Can you imagine? Were gonna have a lot of fun, of dancing, of games, of food, of activities, so on and so forth. Im so excited! Wow, how can I sleep tonight? Let me tell you.”
“Sam!”
