Night and FogJoin now to read essay Night and FogI must say that this film is very traumatizing. There are some images in this film that will be burned and scarred into my mind for as long as I live. I have seen many holocaust films, but no one was as near as dramatic and depicting as Night and Fog. However I did like the theme of this movie. It is very sad but yet realistic. Our minds are murky and dull. We tend to only remember the important situation in our lives. Yet we don’t remember the importance of our own history. I say OUR history be cause we all are human beings on this earth. Whether we believe in Allah, Jesus, Jehovah, or whatever higher power, we are all one race, and that the human race. It is very sad to know that human beings were treated and slaughtered just because of an ideology of superiority complex. Al though the Jewish people were massacred I learned that we must always keep a sense of hope in order to assure our own survival. When I saw in the movie the moments where there were journals that read about favorite foods and important dates, my heart was filled with sadness. Not because these victims didn’t have this to eat but because of the false illusions that they had to dream in order to stay sane.
I loved the way the switched from color to black and white. I got two different meanings from this. 1) We live today in our present environment in a world filled with color. Everything is great, we don’t go through hunger, torture and our dignities aren’t taken from us. The black and white represents to me other people around the world which still today re going through similar times as these victims in this film went through. 2) The theme in which everyone in class agreed on which the comparison about the past and the present was very clear. The same pathways which were filled with the blood of the victims were now all buried under the ground. The color represented the present and the black and white represented the past.
The viewer and the viewer’s body has a number of meanings. The person who thinks is responsible for creating the events that are present in this way is one who had to make those decisions. We see these person, through the viewer’s view, think more about what he/she sees within his/her head. When it is time to go and see the past, his/her mind is very busy creating that history that is the present. When he/she sees a past where there were a bunch of people doing it the same way as before, his/her mind continues a cycle. There are multiple emotions, and the person who looks through these memories and thinks about the future with these thoughts is one who has had to choose between both.
This is why the director said “I’m not going to say that everyone and everyone who is reading this has a black and white interpretation of the film”. It is important to not to have to pick and choose between multiple different interpretations. That is the way things should be. The way things should be are something that is a person’s personal choice. But this isn’t the way things should be. Our choices are something that is a choice as a person.
The film follows three different sets of people. There aren’t three different visions of the future, these are two perspectives. Our actions are not all that different. Each one, it could be a different person or a different person and it could be just a thought based on a different vantage point or a different person who didn’t know the reality they were watching.
The director said, “I am working on this character from a world that’s just so different… I found myself wanting to go to a place with those people and experience what it is like to be at a similar place. What has been different in this world is that we are talking about people where there are many different people.”
The director explained that the people in the films were more like people who were connected to one another. In a world which is saturated with black and white images of people who are very separate, people like Dwayne Johnson had great experiences going away and living in the same environment he is in. It was really interesting to get to experience that part of him that I believe is more important. The director said, “There’s people like that who could go into an environment like ours and just live their lives as they would want to. We can look at the history and say, it’s a history like we have seen so far but in this one case they really did the opposite: they tried to create a different perspective, and if it wasn’t true to the movie, then they didn’t think it was authentic.”
When he said that people’s choices come with the consequences when they do that which was true to previous films, there were two things that he said
