In a comparison and contrast of the old English poem Beowulf and the modern movie the thirteenth warrior. There are many things that show differences between these two subjects but when looked into more deeply many similarities can be pointed out. A major similarity I saw in between Beowulf and the thirteenth warrior was the monster Grendel in Beowulf he said to be of an unspeakable evil and power and the strength of many men. In the thirteenth warrior the Grendel in that is replaced by many monsters named wendols a big comparison was that it was a monster of unspeakable o evil or force they were both categorized into this unnatural area of mankind. Now the difference which is quite apparent is that Grendel was one giant monster that could not be hurt by mere sword and mortal weapons, but in the thirteenth warrior the many wendols can be killed with swords and mortal weapons but none of them leave their dead behind hence the disappearance of the slayed foes in the movie. Another difference is that in Beowulf they explain him to be more of a creature of nature and the disturbing humans were bothering him which set it off to kill. The reason I highlight this issue is that in the times when the poem was written or spoken of it was the time where other stories of mortal vs. nature was something of almost a truth in that time and was quite widely believed . In Beowulf Grendel seems to be painted out as nature and as many of old stories even in Greek mythology paint out monsters to be the representative of everything in nature and in other text discussing mythology humans and nature are constantly battling to some degree. The wendols in the thirteenth warrior seem to be of unnatural roots but its not painted to me as a battle like nature vs. humans but more of just utter destruction without any motive as to why as I seen.in the book Beowulf manages to rip Grendels arm off when the warriors sleep in the hall waiting for Grendel the same as in thirteenth warrior, but in the thirteenth warrior all the slain beast bodies disappear and the only thing is a bear claw in a stick as the trophy instead of arm like in the book. Another similarity but a big difference is that in both book and movie there were two woman leading. In Beowulf Grendels mother came back to seek revenge on the ones who injured her son the same as in thirteenth warrior the wendols come back that following night which seem they are acting on revenge for their slain fellow warriors. The only difference is when in the book Beowulf jumps into a monster infested pond swims to the bottom and kills Grendels mother ending the strife with these monsters. In the movie when the wendols mother is killed it doesnt end it because she is not painted as the leader of the wendols. Now at the end of the Beowulf book Beowulf himself becomes king after doing battle with Grendel and his mother but now as king he has to fight a dragon which he kills but he ends up dying from
