Sections found within an APA paper
An APA-style paper includes the following sections: title page, abstract, introduction,
method, results, discussion, and references. APA papers may also include in them tables and or
figures depending on what type of research the writer is doing. In each section of an APA
formatted paper different types of information about your study are addressed such as:
Do not put page breaks in between the introduction, method, results, and discussion sections.
The title page, abstract, references, table(s), and figure(s) should be on their own pages.
The entire paper should be written in the past tense, in a 12-point font, double-spaced, and with one-inch margins all around.
The Title page of an APA formatted paper is the first page to your paper and should include
the following:
RUNNING HEAD
Page number
The Title to your paper
Authors name
School Affiliation
The RUNNING HEAD (Needs to be all capitalized) should be located in the upper left hand
corner and needs to include the Title (All capital letters as well). The Title should be no
morethan 10 words and should reflect the content of the paper. The page number should be
placed in the upper right corner of the Title page. In the middle of the Title page is where the
Title, authors name, school affiliation, professors name and date should be (double spaced).
The next page following the Title page of an APA formatted paper should be the Abstract.
The Abstract is basically a brief summary of the entire paper and should be written after you
have completed your paper. It needs to be double spaced and the word Abstract needs to be
placed at the top of the page. Same as the Title page, RUNNING HEAD and Title need to be in
the left hand corner as well the page number 2, placed in the right hand corner. Keep the abstract
short and to the point, 100-200 words should be sufficient.
The next page in APA formatting should be the Introduction, which gives the reader an
overview of the topic you are writing about. The goal of the Introduction page is to provide
