In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is a hero because he is a man who fights for justice even at the risk of endangering his family and is an inspiration to all. Throughout the novel, Atticus exhibits bravery by his words and actions. Guarding the jail where Tom Robinson was being held, with only a reading lamp and newspaper, Atticus bravely calms the lynch mob. As the angry men move toward the jail asking if Tom is there, Atticus remains calm and replies “He is, and hes asleep. Dont wake him up.” (Lee To Kill A Mockingbird 171). With only words as a weapon, he responds to the angry mob, that intends to harm Tom, by simply saying to Mr. Cunningham, “You can turn around and go home again, Walter” (172). Courageously, Atticus accepts the job as attorney for Tom, and tries to defend him honorably and fairly. Although hated and ridiculed by some, Atticus accepts the job believing all people, regardless of skin color or social standing, have the right to a fair trial. He explains to Scout that the trail is something he must do. “This case, Tom Robinsons case, is something that goes to the essence of a mans conscience—Scout, I couldnt go to church and worship God if I didnt try to help that man.” (120). Hes showing her that the right decision can be unpopular at times. As a man of integrity, he teaches his children to have empathy for others. The quote, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (33) teaches Scout to be more understanding and less judgmental of others as she lives her daily life. Atticus lives by a honorable moral code. He believes “The one thing that doesnt abide by majority rule is a persons conscience” (120). He leads by example, teaching his children to be honest, kind and courteous to everyone. Only a few have the noble qualities that Atticus possesses. His ability to bravely fight for justice while maintaining his integrity are exceptional characteristics that motivate and inspire. In all ways, he is a hero.
