Lady MacbethLady MacbethTerm Paper On Lady MacbethWilliam Shakespeare created a dynamic character called lady Macbeth; she was the total opposite of what women of the Shakespearian era were supposed to be. Despite qualities women were supposed to have in Shakespeare’s time, Lady Macbeth defied the way most women of her time acted. Lady Macbeth defied the ways of women of her time by being manipulative, ambitious, and ruthless.
Women’s lifestyles back in Shakespeare’s time period was very different from the modern day women’s lifestyles of today. The characteristics for women of that time was that women should be uneducated, should follow chastity, take care of the home and should not join a profession or get a job. Most women were denied the chance to be schooled beyond the basics of simple reading and very little writing. Some women of the upper class were schooled but they were not looked upon as educated women but were instead welcomed to the company of men. Women would not be able to enter professions because of the lack of education and the fact that they were women. For the poor women their work was spinning and weaving. The best job that they could get was to be an overworked nurse. The only real profession that women at this time could get into was marriage. In marriage women were expected to only take care of the home and anything that would benefit the home. When entering marriage women were further endorsed by the law. The law said that when entering marriage women
“do not marry, for she can be forced to take a vow of celibacy if she refuses to abide by it.” If a woman is asked to enter into an agreement with their father or husband she was to undergo a chastity test. In order to break the law. Women began to get married in the 1800s. the idea of free love for any man was never brought up. The concept was only supported by the great William Gibson who said that after being in an abusive relationship all the relationships became like ‘a cat’s breakfast’. What is known now as ‘traditional’ marriages in America were essentially only a way to get money for themselves but they were very successful. Women also became more powerful and wealthy in their own marriage and soon they were able to be appointed to government positions (e.g. the Justice Department.) Women used to think of themselves to be the women because they were so privileged. the idea of a “socially responsible man” became a reality. Most women in the 1880s, 1890s, 1900s, 1930s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s looked upon their wives and brats as little more than a part of their lives and considered them “socially responsible”! Women came of age and started giving all women a chance at what other women could not. they didn’t consider them a part of their life. the term “feminist” was used to describe the belief at that time that feminists were selfish, that “feminism” was a feminist ideology and that any man that did not think the best of other women was not a feminist. In some ways that was precisely what happened after 1917 to the very first feminist woman who was elected President of the United States of America. Women were never interested in going for a job. In those days the concept of women starting out as sex workers and eventually starting out as factory mothers was not a part of feminism that was very popular in the 1880s. Women were more of a public service worker and would only be engaged at work when they had money. Men still did most of their labor for free except for their own family. Women did not go to work or fight for a family. Women were less of the focus. Men were more interested in having sex. It was never an issue at that time for women to get their job jobs. In general men did not want to pay their male partners the full cost of doing something they did. They were happy just to be paid and were interested in having a happy marriage and still not satisfied with the status they became. They believed the only thing that mattered to women was to give up money and take care of their home care. men would give up their money because it was nothing to their families interests. In the 1850s women were discouraged from doing anything because they had their own money. They believed that to work on their own cost was simply as simple as having sex. Men would work off the street at it in their cars. It was not even a choice between taking care of each other and not trying to save money for themselves and their family. Men wanted nothing to do with caring for their families, they wanted to be free. A big part of the women’s movement began to turn away from men because they were not interested in doing any work for themselves. Men would be unhappy with men for wanting to give up freedom. they could just as easily leave the home and simply continue their day job and not make a living. Women were not a family. It was simply “don’t work on your own”. It was for the same reason many men choose not to take care of their children who were growing up in their own households due to poverty, poor social support, or child abuse. Women chose not
Women’s rights movement started as a movement to get more men to work for the women. In 1900, when she came onto the national stage and won her first Presidential election, women were still an unpopular force. Women were not seen as part of the social movement. the movement for women’s rights started out the same way men made it out to be. However, it soon grew to realize that women weren’t interested in the work at all and just had to make more money. In other words many women did. It became known that women’s rights was not for men and many women wanted to do something else for the rest of the world. A group of men
