A: India was always so sunny and happy and London was always grumpy and dark. When I first got to London I had to keep telling myself that India wasnt safe and this is what my mother wanted for me. Once I got used to London, it wasnt so bad but I still missed India. I had had so many friends in both India and London that I didnt know which one I preferred because friends and family is what makes a place home.Q: Did you ever want your papa to come back from war and save you from Miss Michin? Was there anything you liked about the school?A: I always missed my father and Miss Michin didnt like me, but I knew that my father was busy saving the country and I had to stick it out. The first morning I missed my father so much and spent the morning with my doll, Emily, until I was needed downstairs. I love learning, which made school enjoyable. I also had many friends and admirers.Q: What did you enjoy doing during your free time?A: I loved playing with Emily and reading. I also played pretend with the other girls and made up stories for them. I always did my schoolwork in and out of school because I enjoyed it so much.Q: How did you meet Becky? Were you ever embarrassed by her?A: I met Becky when I was telling some stories to the other girls. She was unloading charcoal into the fireplace when she fell asleep listening to my story. She was so embarrassed and other girls started telling her that she had no right to listen, so I said that everyone was able to listen to stories. Becky was always my friend. She always stood by me. It was never her fault that she was a poor maid.  She deserved a friend.Q: What strategies did you use to cope with your fathers death? How did you make the jump from princess to maid?A: When my father died I was devastated. I didnt know what happen. All of a sudden I was told to get into a black dress that was too small on me. I held it together until I went to the attic that was my new bedroom. I didnt really have a choice about being a maid. The work was hard and I wasnt so joyful anymore, which was the hardest part for me.Q: Were you ever mad at the person that owned the diamond mines? Did you ever feel that you didnt deserve it?A: I tried not to be mad because it wasnt his fault. He was only human and he made a mistake. After I met Mr. Carrisford, the person who owned the mines, I saw how upset he was that he caused my fathers death. I always asked myself why did I deserve this. But then I would think about Becky and all the other little girls who were poor and working or on the streets.
