Answer 1.The company is made up of seven business segments, most of which fall under the 3 units i.e. Personal systems group, technology solutions group and imaging and printing group. The type of departmentalization HP follows is the product departmentalization.Answer 2. The authority structure is decentralized structure. HP uses this type of structure because it has a central council to coordinate work and remove duplication. On that HP has 14000 employees, so it is by necessity HP needs decentralized system.Answer 3.The main challenge that HP was facing was that one hand if HP is having a branch in small location then it might not be needing centralized structure and if HP follows the decentralized form then it helps in achieving greater consistency. But if both are followed at the same time then it may lead to lot of confusion inside and outside the system. HP has addressed this problem by rolling out a Program Management Office which will help in deriving a structure which has the bests of both the systems.
The flow of communication here is vertical.Answer 4.Here HP has not addressed the Horizontal and Grapevine Communication techniques.Contemporary OrganisationHP can have their team reorganized and reengineered in such a way that they can update on their works between departments, such as the production department could coordinate with sales department to ascertain the speed of production they require to meet the demands. HP should engage itself in virtual organisation in the major field of HP i.e. IT. This will help them to focus and improve their core competencies.Answer 5.I would prefer an All Channel communication style. The skills I would emphasize with the employees are the writing and face to face communication skills.Answer 6. The major difference that HP will face is cultural difference. Because HP works on a global level and each day the employees have to interact globally. So the decision made in Japan based on their cultures will be different from the decision made in USA.
