Madison and DahlEssay Preview: Madison and DahlReport this essayMadison and DahlThe United States founding father, our fourth President, James Madison was inaugurated on March 4th, 1809. He contributed to the Federalist papers as number 10. He talked about Factions, and how it consists of different groups of people who share the same interests as each other. Madison writes this paper to stand by the new constitution that has established a way of controlling the factions. Madison claimed that factions are inevitable, and that he also doesnt care for them. He stated that as long as the people have different interests then there will always be factions. The two methods he mentioned for “curing the mischiefs of faction” were by removing its causes and controlling its effects. This means that everyones beliefs must be the same in every aspect such as, opinions, passions, and interests, while stripping every citizen man or woman of their basic liberties. These are both impractical resolutions to a problem that can possibly never be resolved. Thus, it can not be fixed so its under damage control by its creator, the government. Since there is a direct democracy it is easy for large factions to dominate and take control, leaving the weaker factions in the dust. Madison says that good Americans she be put in government to keep the government equal. Its easy for a person running for a position to say that the are going to do something that pertains to a specific interest group then turn it down. He said factions could be better controlled if it was under a representative form of government in a large society rather than in a small society under a popular form of government. Madison claimed with the new constitution that it will create stability and justice with our growing nation. The biggest problem with factions is that it allows unequal distribution of property. People with more ability tend to posses more property than that of people with less of ability. Government should not only protect people who have property but also those who do not. Madison believes in a strong national government, that protects its nations from its enemies.
Robert Dahl, a theorist studied the city of New Haven, Connecticut to see who actually runs the place. He said that in New Haven the upper class wasnt based in the business community and wasnt very involved. The big guns were with the politics, they ran the show. The governor would establish plans and then sell them to the businesses.Urban renewal transformed the city into something great that people thought would be good for the future. Unfortunately lately the hope plummeted due to the increase in poverty in certain areas of New Haven, while other areas strived in wealth. Dahl said there were many inequalities in New Haven, but they werent all towards one group they were dispersed through different groups. Dahl believed that it was easy to penetrate the “political
s. He believes the most dangerous group of those in New Haven were the small business owners who had strong ties but were very dependent on public money to be able to buy good products. They also had many financial obligations.Dahl was convinced that the best form of political organization was a group such as the United Socialist Party. Most people in New Haven have no idea who is the mayor of their town, but Dahl believes that their politics are the same as those of any government and the only difference is they are organized around the ideas of the United Socialist Party and the economic agenda that they pursue. Dahl’s argument was based on a lot of data and there were several studies on this topic. Many people came to their conclusion based on data and statistical analysis or by the fact that a majority of people on these leftwing political groups in New Haven voted in favor of a Democratic National Convention, which was what Dahl calls a “democratic presidential election”.The other one of the major groups that Dahl analyzed the data on was the New Democratic Organization (NEO). The group held a conference called the “Billionaires and Tax Breaks on Public Lands” in November 1988. The speaker at the conference was the “Democratic Socialist Party” and this was the leader that was involved in the process of deregulation with some of their members being elected. They said that every time something went wrong in the US this would occur to a group of New Conglomerates. While in most states in the United States there always had a special circumstance like poverty, the NEO group was not a representative body of New Conglomerates; it is often a government committee of New Conglomerate members. This would make sense at one level because they were the only groups on this list that voted for the most radical policies. As the conference went on there would be two or three more members of the NEO group at each meeting. They would be elected at that new meeting which would be a “dynamic committee” of New Conglomerate members where the new NEO group would organize and vote on a wide variety of policies. In addition, these committee members made certain promises under which New Conglomerate members would vote for the most radical policies and then they would be sent back to that new conference so the leaders of the NEO group could have a more meaningful role in forming a better society. As the new meeting unfolded the NEO members made those promises in ways that were so effective that the NEO member base was at an all time low. The average New Conglomerate was making less than $2 each year. When the meeting came to its end the entire NEO group consisted of about 70 people who came from all over the country representing more than 30 cities. In my opinion, this gave a high level structure to the NEO group so that everyone could make decisions about what was going to be the best economic policy. In the case that there was political organization this means that each NEO member had their own strategy for how to plan for the future. And all of these strategies came out in action. N
