The United states are often called media state and the people like to call the media as the 4th part of democracy.This stands for a society in which access to power is through the media. The media in the USA not only convey information to the public, but also influence public opinion and that is the reason why politicians and other powerful persons use it to influence voters, consumers or other people.
The most important typ of media is television. 99% of the American household have at least one television which is averaged switched on for six hours a day.This strong competition from TV is one of the reasons why the readership levels of newspapers are not as high as they once were. The other reason for the low demand for newspapers is that the variety
at local and national levels has been reduced of just a few puplishers and corporations. In 1926 there were more than 500 cities with competing newspapers today there are under forty. That means that 97% of all cities have several newspapers but all of them are puplished by the same corporation. These cities are called “one-owner-towns”. Chain publishers have a total circulation of over 22 two million which is more than one of the total daily newspaper circulation.
You can find two different types of newspapers the dailies like The “Washington Post” or the “New York times” and the periodicals like “newsweek” or the “Reader`s Digest”. The “New York Times”, the “Washington Post” and the “Wall Street Journal” are the most important newspapers of the United States.The “New York Times” has a high reputation for intelligent news coverage and many of it`s reporters have won a journalistic prizes.
