Against the War in Iraq
The Iraq War
What does the United States have to gain from a war with Iraq? I believe that the United States has no business still being in a war with Iraq. Sadam Hussein has been taken out of power and has been executed. I strongly believe that the United States troops being in Iraq is causing far more problems then doing our country and the world justice.

The United States believed that Sadam Hussein’s regime was developing nuclear biological and chemical weapon programs that pose immediate threat to the Unites States. When contemplating whether of not to invade Iraq, congress and the people of the united state were lead to believe that going to war with Iraq was to capture and fortify the weapons of mass destruction that our president said was there and take President Sadam Hussein out of power and end his dictatorship. The United States went ahead with the war even with international protest. Other countries including the United Nations believed there was no conclusive evidence and since then has made more enemies with friends and enemies alike. The United States has seriously ruptured long standing relations with its most important allies (i.e. the United Kingdom), and has created more terrorists then we have killed and has brought a once somewhat peaceful country (Iraq) to civil war.

In President George W. Bush’s presidential speech to our nation on July 28th. 2005 the president provided no solid claim regarding how much progress has actually been made in defeating terrorism in Iraq and the world. As long as the United States military forces remains in Iraq it will only create more “anti-Americanism” among the Arab, Muslim, and allies alike. This “anti-Americanism” will result in more terrorist attacks, not less like the president promised. This proof of anti-Americanism was broadcasted to the world with assault of the Iraqi prisoners made by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib.

The war on terrorism in Afghanistan was to locate Osama bin laden. This seemed contradictory and almost used an excuse to invade Iraq and finish what George Bush senior created in the first gulf war. The first war with Iraq during the early 1990’s was a result of Iraq invading a smaller country of Kuwait. Since then the United States has had bitter feelings toward Saddam Hussein and Bush Jr. has used this to fuel his new battle with the country.

Now since the United States is involved in two wars, we must divide our resources both human and material alike between Afghanistan and Iraq. Overall the United States has spent over 415 billion dollars on the war. With that money the US could have used it to provide over 20 million students with a 4 year college education at a public college. So why stay in Iraq and spend 2 billion dollars a week on a pointless battle? The number will not stop going up anytime soon, projections estimate that the war will cost 2.66 trillion dollars before the supposed war is over.

Since March 2003 when the United States first invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime the United States since has not been able to locate the suspected weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Now the months have turned into years and the president and his advisors tried to justify that they are now in Iraq for peace. So why hasn’t the United States left yet? Bush is trying to push democracy on the Iraqi people when they have made it clear that is not what they want, nor what they can achieve with three diverse religious groups including Shiites, Sunni, and Kurds.

George W. Bush says “Were hunting down the terrorists. Were helping Iraqis build a nation that is an ally on the war on terror, were advancing peace in the broader Middle East and trying to remove valance and lay
