Accountability
Websters dictionary defines accountability as to be answerable for ones own behalf. Accountability is very significant in the United States Army. Not only in just the Army, but also at school and in your workplace. When I signed my name on that dotted line, I made a promise to the Army and to my superiors that this soldier right here would be accountable.
I never knew how important accountability was until January 3, 2013. At the time we were all reporting back to Ft. Sam Houston. We were granted exodus so we all went home for Christmas and New Years. Slowly everyone made their way back to Bravo Company. We had three formations that day. The first one that was held had about twenty missing soldiers. That was expected because of the storm, so naturally flights were delayed or cancelled and some others were stuck in traffic. The second formation every soldier was present except for one. Everyone was annoyed and angry because we were going to have formations until that one soldier showed up. Third formation rolled around and PFC Jennings never arrived. The time was 1800 hours. We were dismissed for the day. The very next morning the sergeants marched us down to the gym. When we were ushered inside it was apparent something wasnt rights. Chaplains stood to the front and to the side of our company. It was announced that PFC Jennings was killed in a car accident. We were shocked and devastated. The commander got up and gave us a speech about accountability. He stated that is why accountability was so essential, if he knew where everyone is at, he wouldnt have to worry about a things. He wanted to know that all his soldiers were safe and out of harms way. PFC Jennings death changed Bravo Company forever.
