Environmentalists win one against Bush
The article I read was “Environmentalists win one against Bush” by the CNNMoney.com. This article explains the ruling by the Supreme Court that the United States Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions that can cause global warming (CNNMoney.com). This lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency was brought on by many states and various environmental groups. “President George W. Bush has opposed mandatory controls on greenhouse gases as harmful to the U.S. economy, and the administration has called for voluntary programs instead of regulation. The states and environmental groups that brought the lawsuit hailed the ruling” (CNNMoney.com). This ruling by the Supreme Court is very important, in that it sets a precedent for environmental matters that President Bush has decided not to pursue.
With global warming such an important issue facing our planet, it is imperative that we do everything possible to prevent it. “Greenhouse gases occur naturally and also are emitted by cars, trucks and factories into the atmosphere. They can trap heat close to Earths surface like the glass walls of a greenhouse. Such emissions have risen steeply in the past century and many scientists see a connection between the rise, an increase in global average temperatures and a related increase in extreme weather, wildfires, melting glaciers and other damage to the environment” (CNNMoney.com).
The ruling was won in the Supreme Court by a vote of 5-4, and said that the Environmental Protection Agency “has offered no reasoned explanation” for its refusal to regulate carbon dioxide and other emissions from cars and trucks (CNNMoney.com). After the ruling, the EPA said it would be committed to reducing greenhouse gases, and that it would review the courts decision to determine an appropriate course of
