I was in the 6th grade when 9/11 occurred. Being so young I didnt understand the whole concept of the World Trade Center being attacked, yet alone even knowing what the World Trade Center even was. Being older and wiser, tragedies that this usually hit me pretty hard. Is this essay I will provide my views and beliefs and hopefully encourage you to also believe agree with me as why guns should be allowed in school.
Being in the United States Navy, I obviously was taught to protect myself and loved ones. When I had my son back in April, a totally different sense of protection took over me. I wanted to protect him from any person, sharp edges or bugs that tried to harm him. On December 14, 2012 I received a text message from a friend of mine to turn the television onto CNN. What I saw what the most shocking thing in my entire life. A man had barged into Sandy Hook Elementary School and shot and killed 26 individuals. 20 of those were children (aged 6-7) and 6 faculty members. As hateful as this may sound, I hear about adults dying all the time whether it is on the news or the radio. Hearing that innocent children were murdered seemed worse and hard to take it. Ive never been a type of female to cry a lot. I usually can keep in my emotions pretty well; not this time. I was devastated to see these parents crying in the middle of the streets, parents running into their mothers arms. What if I was the mother in the middle of street bawling after being told my son was just murdered? Standing in front of the television I began to cry. Then I suddenly thought, why isnt teachers armed at all times to prevent deaths/tragedies like this horrible day?
My son is almost 10 months old and the thought of putting him even in daycare sends chills down my spine. As any typical Texas household, are home is armed with guns for our safety. I would do anything to protect my husband and I. With my son, there is nothing I wouldnt do to protect him from any danger. When a parent sends their child off to school for the day, the child is constantly running through the parents mind.
Whenever I bring this topic up to someone, they automatically imagine a young student with some type of machine gun strapped around them with absolutely no training what so ever. I imagine it a little more realistic. I feel as if there would be fewer tragedies in schools if we had properly trained teachers who are armed with weapons. I think
