Media Vs. IdeologyEssay Preview: Media Vs. IdeologyReport this essayIs “media” simply a synonym for ideology? For some reason this question seems really easy to answer: Yes. One cultures media content will depend on their particular ideology. In class we have viewed two movies now: Frank Capras “You Cant Take it With You,” made in 1938, and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylors “Crank,” made in 2006. Using a couple of examples from each movie, I believe I can adequately defend my answer as well as use Todd Gitlins Media Unlimited, to relate it all to the concept of speed.
The first movie, You Cant Take It With You,” is an older movie, though it features stunning black and white color schemes and it is even filled with explosions! In the movies content, however, certain ideologies can be noted that are even used in todays movies. For example, as you view the story line you learn that the Kirby family members are filthy rich bankers that have all the characteristics of their upper class status. At dinner in the restaurant, the Kirbys sit around their table with other upper classers and make jokes and visibly judge Mr. Kirbys future daughter-in-law, as she is of a lower economic class. This can be even further examined when they are all in jail. Mr. Kirby starts ranting about his “jungle” and “sharp claws” and notes that he uses them so that he doesnt end up as “scum like these [prisoners] still in the gutter.” Both of these examples are still the ideologies of the middle class in today’s world. This is all you see in the media, be it radio, paper, or news. Upper classers wanting more, and lower classers ending up as the “scum in prison.”
The second movie we watched, “Crank,” was one of the dumbest movies Ive ever seen. It was a movie whose plot was so abstract and hard to follow that I ended up getting lost often. This doesnt mean that there arent some good examples to back up my theory though. The movie is about a guy named Chev, who is an assassin that gets injected with a special poison where if his heart rate drops too low, he could go into a coma and die. This means that he has to be fueled by adrenaline, and what better adrenaline is there than sex in public places? Yes, in order to get his heart rate up, Chev starts having sex with his girlfriend, Eve, in the middle of a crowded China Town. In media, we are
lubed when the women come on the scene, and the scenes we see in this movie are amazing. Here is one good example of the scene, and it was done by the movie author, David Albright.
My first impression of the movie was that it was about a group of thugs who are forced to act like sexless human beings, and it was very much like in the movie. Somehow, from your view, it didn’t look like there was a lot of violence taking place either in the movie or in the movie itself. So here you have people of color, young women who are in a car in the middle of nowhere, and they’re just fucking their husbands, and they’re making fun of others for doing that, and they are constantly being raped. I’m not sure I’ve ever liked a movie where the violence is so out of place that these men are actually raping other men and their own, and it just kind of leaves things a bit more tense. I loved this, as I said before. But after the film, I began to watch an increasing number of movies that were called ”sex in society”. One of the more disturbing movies to me is the movie by David Albright. The idea of being coerced into doing something really horrible is kind of shocking, but also very creepy. The thing that really strikes me is, for those who are not white people, what is that “power to give” about society? Is society really meant to be a sexual club. The movie starts out like that, and it continues to be quite a while later, but it gets to a point where it seems we begin to start seeing women get sex. So I started to understand why people would not want to have sex in society. Then it started to get more and more explicit. Then it became sort of more explicit. Then it became more explicit than what I was used to watching on TV. That’s sort of what happens.
For me, watching this movie was a perfect example of how we can treat the movie as a documentary or whatever kind of documentary format. I think that when we get to the point where we’re not just talking about the movie, but what the actual action is, the movie takes on a new meaning. What I’d say is that we have to rethink the way we treat women in this age and how we treat people in the world at large.
This is something that I just wish that more movies and films and directors could come out to demonstrate the fact that we don’t just focus on the movies,
