Gene One is a privately owned company specializing in biotechnological agriculture advances. Its vegetable products: Tender Tomatoes and Perfect Potatoes have a gene variant that allows them to be grown without the use of harmful pesticides. These products have taken Gene One from a 2 million dollar start up organization to a 400 million dollar company in a time span of just 8 years. In order to gain the funds necessary to further advance in biotech field and to create new products the CEO of Gene One, Don Ruiz, has decided and Initial Public Offering (IPO) would be the optimal solution.

This decision has generated much debate and created increased tensions at Gene One. People are offering resignations, talking about leaving Gene One and a lot of rumors are circulating around about the future of the company.

The Executive Board, the Chief Leadership Team, and the employees of Gene One are all at a crossroads in where they stand with the company and where they going. These conflicting interests are putting the success of Gene Ones IPO intentions at a halt. The lack of experience with the higher ups in this organization also allot for some stormy weather ahead.

With a look at Gene Ones possible solutions and a final decision as for what best fits this organizations needs there is no doubt a solution benefiting all stakeholders can be met and the future of Gene One can be realized. A well thought out plan with plenty of backup ideas can lead Gene One out of this tricky gray colored situation into the definitive black and white world with endless possibilities where the future looks bright.

Situation Analysis
Issue and Opportunity Identification
Gene One started with a group of people that are friends, family, acquaintances, and academic colleagues. Within 8 years the company has grown astronomically and have hired on new employees. With this rapid growth the foundation of what the company believes and what their core purposes are have been lost in the mix. The belief to “create new and better produce varieties that can change the lives of people around the world,” (University of Phoenix, Scenario: Gene One). Coming from people who share a close intimate background it is would seem as though that the company have a strong background and vibrant values, this however is not the case. Before Gene One goes public they have the chance to lay a foundation and define core purposes as a company. An organizational culture needs to be laid down. Another issue in this scenario is that Angela Thomas VP of Technology Research Labs resigns because Gene One is going corporate and feels that Gene One is no longer the right place for her. The immense pressure to create products on a time line places too much demand for her. She is more concerned with the quality of her research. Shed rather spend time extensively researching which is more costly, but in the long run can save the company millions of dollars. The timelines are also impractical because their product is food which is ultimately being consumed and put into the bodies of people. This cognitive dissonance that Angela is experiencing is threatening the team viability of the research department at Gene One because shortly after Angela put in her notice to leave Gene One, Teri Robertson the Chief Technology Officer, questions her own reasons to stay, “Im not sure this is the right place for me either,” (University of Phoenix, Scenario: Gene One). Angela and Teris work hand in hand. They have built a solid team and there is a mutual respect amongst these team members.

The opportunity to engage in dialogue with Angela about her concerns with Gene Ones IPO decision and what she feels may change within the company may curb a lot of grief that may come with her loss as well as the impending decision on whether Teri will continue with Gene One.

An additional concern facing Gene One lies with Don Ruizs intention to go with an IPO. He has made his decision and anyone that is not on board with his plans can submit their resignation.
