2005 State of the Union AddressEssay Preview: 2005 State of the Union AddressReport this essayAfter watching the 2005 State of the Union address. I think that the President, Mr. George W. Bush, has made it clear to the Speaker of the House, Vice President, Membe4rs of Congress, and the citizens of the United States that he has a clear plan to improve the welfare of the United States in present days and days to come.
The President put forth that he has now a plan for a budget that holds discretionary spending below inflation, makes tax relief permanent, and to cut the deficit in half by the year 2009. The principle to his budget is, ” Taxpayer money must be spent wisely, or not at all.” It was also stated that education is a very important part of this nation and that the standards of the schools need to be raised, “so every high school diploma is a ticket to success.” Later on he speaks of keeping young children and adolescents out of gangs and dangerous violence and encourages that more people be involved in a childs life by increasing the number of programs to improve literacy and sports. He told of the nation wide effort to do this that would be lead by the First Lady, Laura Bush.
–President Obama’s vision for America’s middle class, and the public’s growing support for and love for the nation’s middle classes, is well known. Some of Obama’s more controversial policies were not enacted because of political beliefs, but simply because he saw it as a part of a larger plan to expand opportunity, raise income inequality and build up the middle class. That was no surprise to critics of President Ronald Reagan – after all, President Reagan actually signed a number of budget decrees in the face of protests and, for example, the 1981 tax cuts. But it was also clear that these were not policy prescriptions for a government that is taking so many steps to make this great country better.
–A number of Obama-era programs have been passed into law that can reduce or eliminate some of these programs, such as the Family Tax Credit, which funds the retirement program for low-income families, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which is a government program that provides early-care centers for low-income families, and the $17 million in Social Security retirement benefit, among others, which was funded through the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
–In 2009, President Obama cut a number of important programs such as the Medicaid program and food subsidy, to the tune of almost two million Americans out of their food stamps. He also cut nearly $700 million in Social Security subsidies. Of the many programs Obama was cut from 2009, only 20 were funded through these programs.
–An expanded and comprehensive Federal Trade Commission found earlier this year that most of the proposed regulations put forward today were not designed with the Federal Open Market Committee’s view that federal regulations are too vague to be effective. This was at the risk of bringing into focus the role of trade in promoting the benefits of the free trade agreement negotiated by world leaders. The FTC investigation has found the rules are not effective — or more of a “prejudicial move against a particular country” than a free trade agreement. While the FTC said the rules do not impose rules on foreign companies — in line with the current practice of imposing such fine controls on American firms in order to force their compliance with foreign law — this view of the rules does not support the current position.
–The Obama Administration’s first-ever public proposal to roll back Obama regulatory actions that have taken steps to reduce the size of the federal government shows just how much of the economic burden can be offset by programs that are already taking action. The President began his Administration’s plans during his first term with a commitment signed by President George W. Bush to end regulations that have been taken as a result of the worst possible recession and the biggest single government regulation since FDR’s Progressive New Deal, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 1972. Underlying the plan is the Obama Administration’s plan for re-establishing the National Labor Relations Board, which is currently an essential part of the national labor regime.
–Under the new approach to the regulation of American businesses, as well as under its much stricter enforcement, the Department of Justice has started closing thousands of low
Also so the healthcare and costs of health care for lower income families was brought to attention. The President stated that the costs of healthcare should be made affordable to all families that need it. Stating that it should be available to people of every financial status and that there be a community health care center for every needy community. And that information technology should be improved so that fewer errors are made as well as needless costs. He believes that there should be association health care plans for small business owners and their employees and many measures to decrease healthcare costs.
The President talked to the Social Security system and how if it is unreformed that it will only lead to its own bankruptcy. He assured those that are now receiving or will be receiving Social Security in the near future that their Social Security would not be affected in any way. The President would like to prevent the deterioration of the Social Security system. According to the facts provided by the President, as of now there are a
diminishing number of workers paying an increasing amount of benefits to an increasing number of retirees. If it continues to be like this in the year 2018 the system would be paying out more than it takes in and in the year 2027 it will put the government into a hole of two hundred billion dollars for Social Security alone. By that time the only solution would be to dramatically raise taxes, borrowing, and cuts in benefits or government programs. He assures the people that he will not raise taxes and that all changes that are made will be gradual as to allow time for preparation. He states that he will work with Congress to come up with the best solution and, “I will listen to anyone who has an idea to offer.” He suggests that there be voluntary personal retirement accounts. Under this plan set portion of your money would go to the people that are now receiving benefits. Another small portion is set aside for you to grow interest. This way the money is yours and only yours and cannot be touched by the government. As I think it should be. This way if you would like to leave this money to someone you are free to. Up to thus far I think that the President has hit many bases that everyone wanted to hear and that appealing to people of all wealth statuses has also very well rounded him. I also approve of his plan for Social Security because I like the fact that the money that I set aside will be out of the hands of the government.
He spoke of marriage being a sacred institution and a foundation of society that should not be re-defined by activist judges and how he supports and amendment that will protect it. Also that medical research needs to be supported to improve our culture of life. He tanked Congress for doubling the funding of the National Institute of Health. I believe as he does that the medical technology needs to be increased but not at the cost of human life and as thus so human breeding should not be allowed. I support the President in his stance that human embryos are still life and as such should not be created for experimentation or for body parts and that medical study should be kept ethical.
Next the President spoke on the very important issues of terrorism, national security, and the U.S. military. He spoke of how measures have been taken after September 11, 2001 to improve homeland security and they will continue to do so. He also thanked those who are now working to keep our homeland safe. The protection of freedom is something that is very important and I think that all of the measures that have been taken in the way of antiterrorism and the pursuing of terrorists are necessary as well as the destruction of al-Qaida. The President urged the support of the military to support advancements made and to continue the creation of coalitions that will defeat the dangers of our times. The ultimate goal stated by the President
