Vincent Van Gogh, who was born in Holland in 1853, used color as his best way of
expression in his artwork. Inspired by colorful Japanese art, he created many colorful paintings
and drawings in his short lifetime.
In Vincent Van Goghs painting, Sunflowers, much emotion can be seen. All of the
colors match and seem to flow together. The bright yellow background helps the sunflowers and
vase stand out. This makes it easy to follow the shape and detail of the flowers. The leaves of
the flowers can be easily identified by their deep green color.
The light in this painting is neither overwhelming nor dim, but more neutral. A small
amount of shading can be seen on some of the taller flowers. One can see the shading in this
painting after closely focusing in on the detail of the flower petals and leaves.
Balance is easily seen in this painting. Radial balance can be seen in some of the
individual flowers. The painting as a whole has an asymmetrical feel. The weight of the
sunflowers on the left seem to balance out with the weight of the sunflowers on the right.
