Discussion Board Unit 3
There are differences in a face-to face teams and a virtual teams. Face-to face teams can communicate to each other at the moment they are together. Body language can be seen so that you can tell what someone is really thinking, and making eye contact with people is a big plus. On a face-to face team you can get feedback from your group right away, instead of waiting for an answer from far away. You can be persuasive and be able to talk out what needs to be talked about until a design has been made. Being in a face-to-face group also helps you to gain trust and respect from your group as you get to know them on a personal level. The discussions can be time consuming and it is hard to have a paper trail of things that maybe very important to the group.
A virtual team uses the information technology for their teams. They can use video conferencing, teleconferencing, instant messaging, or even be hooked up to certain software made just for the company they work for, to use for decision making, resource optimization, and strategic planning. Some of these software can even let them test ideas in a virtual world where mistakes can be made and do not cost the company money. A virtual team uses any electronic means to communicate to people on their team that they may never see. These virtual teams do have challenges that face-to-face group have. They can have social loafing. They also have the challenges of maintaining a good balance between conformity and deviance. These teams may meet face-to-face once in a while just to get to know each other on a personal level. These virtual teams are good for companies that are spread out and in other countries. These teams can have flexibility because of using the software their companies have in place. All of their information can be archived so that others on the team can see what is happening. This also makes it easier if they have a new team mate come aboard. The new person can read the archives and know what is going on. This would help a company save money buy not having to train the new person. People do feel dissatisfied because of not getting to work face-to-face with their team members but, the company can help this by setting up a time every so often for the virtual team to meet.
