Persepolis Research Paper
In Persepolis which is an autobiographical memoir written by Marjane Satrapi she makes allusions to many historical politicians and cultural individuals. This gives the reader a better understanding of Marjane’s life and the personality growing up in the a revolution that seen many wars within the streets of Iran. There are figures that helped Marjane create a mind of her own that illustrated her own definition of freedom. Two figures seen throughout the story are Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. They helped shaped Marjane’s views of revolutions and when it time to fight back.

Vladimir Lenin was born with the name Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov on April 22, 1870, in Simbirsk, Russia. In 1901,is when Ulyanov adopted the last name Lenin. Later on the town was renamed Ulyanovsk which honored Lenin. He was brought up in a house that was well-educated as well as a household that was tightknit. 1887, is when Lenin’s older brother, Aleksandr, a college student at the time, was arrested and executed for taking part of a group planning to assassinate Emperor Alexander III. His father was already dead, Lenin shortly after became the man of the family. Lenin then received his law degree, finishing in 1892. He moved to the city of Samara where he represented mostly Russians.The struggles they were experiencing against what Lenin saw as a class-biased legal system only supported his Marxist beliefs. Lenin then focused on his revolutionary thoughts. He then left Samara in the mid-1890s to start a new life in St. Petersburg which was the Russian capital at the time.

While living there Lenin connected with other individuals that shared the same views Marxists and began to take an increasingly active role in their activities.The work did not go unnoticed, and in December 1895 Lenin and several other Marxist leaders were arrested. Lenin was exiled to Siberia for three years. On January 9, 1905 is when a group of unarmed workers in St. Petersburg took their concerns to Emperor Nicholas II.The security force shot at the group killing and wounding hundreds.This is the event that set off the Russian Revolution.Since Lenin had two stroke one in May and December he started to think of ways to form a new government,but sadly over the year his party’s goals became unclear. In early 1923 he wrote a testament where he made sure his disappointments were known.On March 10, 1923 Lenin had another stroke which took his ability to speak and move. Ten months later on January 21, 1924 he passed away.

Leon Trotsky who was originally born as Lev Davidovich Bronstein in Yanovka, Ukraine on November 7,1879. His parents, David and Anna Bronstein, were prosperous Jewish farmers. Later on they then moved in 1896 to Nikolayev, Ukraine, for his final year in school. While there, he became extremely interested with Marxism. In 1897, Trotsky help by founding the workers union in south Russia. He was arrested within a year and spent two years in prison before being sent to Siberia for a four-year sentence .After serving only two years of his sentence, Leon Trotsky escaped exile. He abandoned his wife whom had decided to go with him and his daughters that were born during exile.He changed his name to Leon Trotsky. He made his way to London, England, where he was apart of Socialist Democratic Party and where he met Vladimir Lenin. When word
