Thesus statement
Identity of ones self is not so much automatic or naturally inherited from our parents. instead, it is more how use these innate factors as tools in order to communicate with the rest of society ; and as a result certain experiences and events come together forming a conscious of our overall identity. but as time passes certain barriers incur which may affect our decisions and give us the ability to belong.
Perception: people
Through out the short story “signs and symbols” by “Vladimir Nabokov” shows that the sons connection to people is not so much strong. As he lives in a mental institution, preventing him from understanding the different norms of society. therefore not allowing him develop a bond with others.
This can be linked to the perception of place in Peter Skryzineckis migrant chronicles. If an individual did not find interest in the people of a certain area as these are the inhabitants of the area, it would make it difficult to find a link to that place.
it is shown in “10 Mary Street” that Peter Skryzinecki wants to move on but his parents fail to let go. in this sense just as his parents are emotionally attached to Poland so is he attached to Australia. it is more that he is not fond of his parents because they dont understand his needs there for not feeling belonging to Poland.
Context: social
Through irony shown through “man made objects were to him either hives of evil or gross comforts for which no use could be found”, the writer Nabokov suggests that personifying inanimate objects, shows the limitation of ordinary human emotions with in the son. this ironically demonstrates how he fails to belong to society through his small understanding of social norms. This is similar to how Peter Skryzinecki failed to understand why his father was greeted in such a way by his polish friends, ” the formal address i never got used to”. We can also see that Peter Skryzinecki didnt understand the polish society and their way of life. There for not belonging to the Polish society.
Notion : identity
the son along side the rest of the family begin to lose there sense of their whole identity to each other and the rest of the community. through not giving them names Nabokov makes it obvious that a limited amount of identity through the experience of the family migrating and the sons depleting of sanity. this was never shown in “10 Mary Street” as he has a choice to chose which cultural identity he wants to belong to. where as for the mother in “signs and Symbols” as her identity is so to say in the hands of his son.
Aspect: barriers
due to certain barriers the child and his parents in “signs and symbols” find
