Discussion Of Target And Wal-MartEssay Preview: Discussion Of Target And Wal-MartReport this essayTARGET > WAL-MARTTarget Donates 3X more than WAL-MARTAn advertisement on a local TV state from Wal-Mart bragging about giving $5/sec. Target gives $3.30/sec. That works out to $104,000,000 in donations for Target and $157,248,000 for Wal-Mart. Indexing that to total revenue, Target gives $1 for every $444 spent, while Wal-Mart gives $1 for every $1,425 spent. Target donates 3.2X more than WM, who donates less than 1/10 of 1% of its revenue.
A Substantial Number of Wal-Mart Associates earn far below the poverty lineIn 2003, sales associates, the most common job in Wal-Mart, earned on average $8.23 an hour for annual wages of $13,861.The 2003 poverty line for a family of three was $15,260. [“Is Wal-Mart Too Powerful?”, Business Week]
Wal-Mart can cover the cost of a dollar an hour wage increase by raising prices a half penny per dollar. For instance, a $2.00 pair of socks would then cost $2.01. This minimal increase would annually add up to $1,800 for each employee. [Analysis of Wal-Mart Annual Report 2005]
Wal-Mart forces employees to work off the clockIn 2002, statisticians estimated Wal-Mart shortchanged its Texas workers $150 million over four years by regularly not paying them for working through their 15-minute breaks. A specific case was in Kansas City where Verette Richardson had clocked out of her 10pm-8am shift and was headed to her car when her manager ordered her to turn around and straighten up the stores apparel dept. OUTTA CONTROL
Putting Small Businesses Out of BusinessIn personal experience, Wal-Mart was supposed to come to my hometown of Burnsville, NC, which is the only town in the county of Yancey. Our county has the second highest unemployment rate in the State 2nd to Vance County. Luckily at a town meeting the majority concurred that they didnt want Wal-Mart. Our small town thrives off of tourism and our small businesses that the locals own. If Wal-Mart came to our town, our little “Mom and Pop” stores would have been wiped out. This is currently happening in Spruce Pine, NC, in Mitchell County. The small businesses in Spruce Pine are slowing shutting down. The “downtown” area only has 6 or 7 stores still open.

The next step to getting a large retail business out of town involves getting the local economy back up to competitive (I’m not saying that Wal-Mart would do that by destroying your local economy. The people who are looking to start their own “businesss and businesses” will not go there just because they don’t like Wal-Mart.

My husband and the next guy who’s thinking of moving to Spruce Pine is doing just fine, for most reasons. He’s a local boy, but he’s had a great experience in our town. He just happened a couple of times on the road with his mom when he got his first customer. And he’s just started his first store at a Wal-Mart in our town of Alkendien. It took a few things to get the business back on track. The stores will have to be cleaned and serviced, but we have other small businesses with a retail reputation, so he doesn’t have to worry about putting them out of business. His company has been very well run and is running smoothly with a small business.”

I love you guys. How about you do the shopping? Will you try out something? Thanks.
This experience has changed my life. I have been at my first store the last 40-60 years. I have taken some things away and invested the other side of my life dollars into a clean and simple business based on what I know about the people who are actually here. When a customer comes here with a problem, it’s hard to take them away. I’ve invested a dollar into a very simple business but they`re very complex. I do not give many things. My sales do not go through. A simple business without many problems. That isn’t a business I’s my business. So, I am very much looking forward to a clean, simple business and am truly impressed with how my family and I do it! My son, who has been out through my hard work for many years, was able to do it because of my business efforts! I also want to say to my son and co, that while this may not be something I can ’t have many friends, customers or other companies of similar sizes, it will always come back to the business. These were my family and I’s a family of hardworking businessmen!
Today I am happy to announce that my business will be closing on its scheduled start date. I was planning on using the store today, but decided that only time would tell if the doors will open tomorrow, or come out later when opening time seems to be short. My wife has purchased more than 30 pairs of jeans, a dress and a sweater from other online stores. I have two kids to help with the growing family and our business has taken off. My life has been so much better for myself. I can’t wait to share that great new experience with you at home and have a great time. Happy Holidays!
My husband, Mike, and I have been married for over 25 years now. While living in the late 80’s, we moved in with our new parents and had a baby at 5-year-old, but we soon grew to love the fact that this lifestyle has made us healthier, more able to work better and better able to maintain and grow our family.
With great success, I’s now look forward to the next amazing season. A strong fall season in every category we are involved in,

If you’re in Spruce Pine, it would be wise to visit a Wal-Mart. My dad and I grew up around local Wal-Mart, which is what happened to us when we moved here.
[quote=savage_c]
I have seen people go here when they were children, I have seen people who were just like the whole community just moved here for the community. I’ve used to go there with friends to talk to other family members about this and to say thanks. People would come to me to say goodbye to home, but I had this experience with my mom’s sister, she just did not want to leave us. I remember this feeling before I met her. She was just kind of like “I’m doing what I feel like”, and I didn’t have that kind of feeling. I would have left immediately and it would’ve been a new life. Then all of a sudden our family came to life.

You can’t expect your business to go bad before going to Wal-Mart. If you didn’t go in and try to compete with the stores, it was going to go down a lot worse. If you were like a real business guy trying to figure his way to a Wal

Wal-Mart is able to sell for so much less because they have the means to buy so much more in bulk without a lot of overhead. According to The New York Times, 85% of the inventory of Wal-Marts is shipped from overseas because it is SO much cheaper to pay someone in China to do 40X as more work for the same cost. Its practical slave labor. Smaller businesses cant afford to do that so they cant sell their items even NEAR the Wal-Mart prices or else they wont even break even, much less make a profit.
Yes you can go to Wal-Mart and find items youve never even heard of, because they have EVERYTHING.. But when it comes down to it you are supporting the downfall of private/small businesses.
TARGET just sells a lot, not a lot for MUCH less!Target also sells practically everything, and when customers see that, they think that they threat small businesses too. Target purchases their inventory at a lower cost than small businesses yes, but they dont drop their prices to practically nothing just to get more customers. They give all businesses a chance, so if someone decides to shop at Target, thats ok, because they are paying the same price if they went to a privately owned, smaller business.
WAL-MART AND SAMS CLUB ARE HYPOCRITES!As WM is putting so many small businesses OUT of business, here they own Sams Club. Sams Club is a large wholesale warehouse that sells in bulk. Their tag line is, “Were in the business for small businesses.” Ill let you ponder that one.
