Mother of All Opportunities: The InternetMOTHER OF ALL OPPORTUNITIES: THE INTERNETThe way world moves today, has changed from what it would have 20 years back. The enabler for this and for the way we work today, the way we do business today and even the way we talk today is nothing other than the broad intertwined network of communication-the INTERNET. The internet as a matter of fact has prompted setting up of businesses and domains, no one from a few years back would have considered as viable, much less considered as practical. There are two major factors that affect how internet has changed how we work-First: internet as an enabler for mobile phone user which constitute a major part of our communications and e-tailing and second as an enabler of services in the form of platform for e-commerce et that works as a platform for the growth of everyone who chooses to be involved, without any biases. The internet has also led to better and more neutral opportunities to anyone who is remote and does not belong to mainstream cities. The growth has moved from the metro to other big cities and tier 1 cities. It has also led to seemingly unconventional ideas succeeding and creation of jobs. Things like Flipkart or Zomato would not have seen light of day otherwise. More importantly, Internet has given job opportunities to millions-either as a BPO employee, or and IT company employee or even as a seller on Jabong-The jobs are there to be grabbed.

MARKET MAKERSE-ReadersThe e-reader or electronic book reader is a digital device used to read books, journals etc. So essentially any device that can help you read text ideally falls into this category. This was a relatively unknown and un-explored domain because no one saw the need statement of having an E-reader per se. But Sony in 2004 developed one to show how your entire library could be stored in this light weight hand held device. From here on, E-readers became rage and the most successful e-reader commercially has been the Amazon Kindle, launched in 2007. The first gen kindle has 250MB of space and easily stored about 200 books. What E-readers also created the market for was E-books. This category happens to be the single biggest category available on Amazon and a starting point for Flipkart in India. Out of nowhere, an opportunity presented itself and created a 4 million title strong category online.

In the past, Kindle computers could be loaded at 3 or 4 megapixels per display which would allow for the entire user to comfortably read, take notes and play with the digital media such as music, photos and videos. With digital reading, you literally just watched a book. After each day of use (about 7 hours of your time) you would be given a list of all of the books in the book on your computer. Each book would become complete as it was read as you watched. This meant you could get as much as 6 million reads at this simple computer.

Smartphones

• Smartphones were an extremely popular technology introduced at the turn of the 20th century. There had been a big outcry at the time since they wouldn’t replace our traditional smartphones but they were more like a game changer in the sense that they replaced our traditional PCs. What did the iPhone and iPad do in terms of mobile computing? They went after the big game and went after everyone else as well. • The smart phone made it easier for users to download or use the apps they downloaded. There actually WAS no need for a device for this. If you were going to have a real phone that supported a number of media features then you had the option of playing with your favorite movies and sports and a plethora of apps. Smartphones provided the backbone to the modern mobile business in terms of the user interface and they also offered an ever growing number of different kinds of services, such as music access where you could use your
