Introduction to “Ways Of Reading”
After reading the Introduction to “Ways Of Reading” it feels as though a door has opened. I found dissimilarities to any reading and writing I have done prior to college. Looking forward, I see the potential to learn to read and write in a new way. I believe that this semesters English course will both meet and challenge my expectations.
Prior to college, the expectations for reading and writing projects were basically to write about what you read. The Introduction indicates we will learn much more. I am excited at the thought of being taught to read a new way by “learning how to work on reading rather than just reading”. That quote alone opens up the door to seeing reading in a whole new light. For example, starting with an essay and trying to compose what it means to you. This makes perfect sense to me, and I hope to master this skill. By the 2nd class I was introduced to “reading with and against the grain” a bit more than just reading it. This is a concept I have not been exposed to and look forward to learning. It looks as though “Reading with and against the grain” requires one to ask different questions to learn. The introduction of the book itself is a tool that I believe I will refer back to often.
After reading the introduction, I feel this course will exceed my expectations. I expected this course to be challenging for me because I feel writing is not my best quality. I expected to work hard and become better skilled in writing. I learned that you can not just read, but must work on reading in great detail. There is a lot more to learning the process of reading and writing, and I believe I will be working harder than I expected!
