Leadership Experiences
Leadership/teamwork Experiences2011, Huawei (Sydney) I joined Huawei in March 2011, because I don’t like the boring life in Sydney, just staying at home, cooking, and shopping. I took Huawei’s offer, although I know it would be a tough life from then on. I was a material management specialist, not at manager level at first. But after several weeks’ work, I clearly realized that I could not handle the increasing workload and really needed some help soon. So I talked to my boss that I needed a team and I could be the leader, otherwise the overall work progress would be slow down because I could not support all requests in the future timely. They known what was going on and agreed to give me some headcounts, but they were reluctant to hire 6 more people. I told them 3 must and 6 better. 3 new people with some experiences joined my team in one month. Beside my routine and increasing material management work, I reviewed CVs, interviewed candidates, trained new comers, fixed problems, etc. During that period, I worked more than 100h/w, and the workload almost beat me down. I had palpitations one Friday morning, and my colleagues sent me to a hospital. The doctor suggested me to take a break, so I had a work free weekend and I thought of how to support my members and accelerate the training progress for new employees—a complete working guide. Huawei has very good working guides for technique positions, but not for non-techs, esp. for new team. I re-assigned the work in my team and started to draft the guide from the next Monday. At the same time my application for 3 more headcounts was approved.

After 3 days, the first edition was complete and I invited my bosses, peers and team members to review the guide, which covered at least 90% knowledge we need to know and the work we need to do, from basic telecommunication knowledge to material description, from working process to how to draft an email, from team members’ evaluation to KPI system. The guide saved me a lot of energy to train new members and solve common problems in daily work. It also welcomed by other departments because it is simple and practical. After one month, 3 fresh graduates joined my team. I needed young people to support non-critical regions/projects and brought passions and fun to the team. I also knew who could be the right person in charge when I was not in office. When I left Huawei in 2012, the “right person” took my role and the guide was revised to the 6th edition. What I am most proud of is my team was recognized as the most efficient and happiest team in Huawei AU.2010, Lenovo Every team has New Year party, and every member loves the party, especially in a big company like Lenovo that has a long party history. In the last month 2009, my boss assigned me a small project — to prepare a team show for the joint New Year party with Finance, Marketing and Strategy teams. His direction was simple: funny, impressive and every team member must in.
