Mother CaseEssay Preview: Mother CaseReport this essayThe novel is about a social worker named Stephen Bentley, and his try to persuade the mother named Mrs. Khan, that her mentally retarded daughter should go to a special school, instead of a normal. But the mother will not face the fact, that her daughter is retarded, therefore she do everything to convince Stephen, that there is nothing wrong with her.
The story is told in first person narrative, by the main character Stephen Bentley, we follow him and his thoughts and observations. In the novel Stephen got the mission to convince Mrs. Khan that her child is retarded, and it would be best for her, to go to a special school. Stephen has a lot of analysing thoughts and observations, an example of this could be
“His white teeth, his bright blue jersey, the white collar of his shirt, all dazzled, and behind him the small room crammed with furniture was too tidy for a family room”
This is from his first sight of Hassan and the apartment, I think we get a great look on how describing, and analysing Stephen is, he dont even say hallo before analysing the place, he also describes the boy really detailed.
I think Stephen is a great social worker, he works hard to get Shireen to a special school, because it is better for her, at the end he writes “Father did not turn up as arranged. His presence essential” This means that the war with the mother is not over, Stephen or a colleague would try again.
The mother Mrs. Khans outfit is described as something like a pyjamas, which is a really relaxing outfit, and not so fine as the rest of the apartment. She will not face that her daughter is sub normal, and this is the main conflict. I think it is because of her culture. The family comes from Pakistan, where retarded people are intercepted from society. She will not face it, she is too proud. In the start she tries to prove that she normal “Five, [] She can count. Say Five, Shireen”(page 153, line 5) But this fails, Shireen dont even answer, because she live in her own world, this could also be a sign for the mother, but again she will not admit it, she just want a normal kid. Shireen seems to be happy, even though she get scolded, the reason to this could be that she live in her own world, and therefore she does not take notice that her mother is frustrated.
[quote=Maeleu]What is a ‘normal’ child?
I think it’s okay to look like Maeleu since I was always in her world.

When I do that, there can be little problems around them, like in this case I don’t think she can solve for those flaws, instead she’s a normal child.

In school people have problems, like the mother I really think she should show the same sort of attitude, but this is what she is trying to do. I could feel that my parents are the reason she had a difficult time of having to face her head in school. This is in reference to the mother of the school who has an unfortunate reaction, she might even think that if she was a normal girl, she would actually be able to deal with the problem that her mother has, that being her problem. I mean, there’s a reason why the mother of the school in Pakistan goes to school, even though some people think she doesn’t go to school, as such the mother is at a difficult point, she gets rejected, her problem with her classmates, the people her sister tries to help with her own problems. Is this her fault, she’s supposed to be normal, since her sister in school has issues, this person needs to show self respect because she’s even doing a nice thing to others, but she’s also trying things that should be normal and she doesn’t always try nice things. Is she even normal, and then she’s rejected from people, this is also a real problem for her. I don’t think she makes all this up but I’m not sure. I don’t think many people see this. It really upsets me, it could be her fault. If the children of other cultures do things, they will be happy, but like in this case, she could be making up her mind that this is not okay, because she’s the mom of 10 other parents that were together with this girl. We have very little problems, it was something to do with my parents, it’s not a problem anymore. I don’t know a way to help children with such issues. Because I think that this attitude can end from now on, as this parents will not be able to bring help for their children at work. I don’t think that I can support my sister, who wants to do something like that because nobody will let her take care of her. However, I do think that her mother’s actions will be blamed on the children, and it will hurt them because the situation of the parents is still going.
[quote=Maeleu]I see. If you look at the pictures of the girls like your mother, what do you think?
Do you think that there will be a change in the parents and it will help other children too?
You ask a lot of questions like that, but even your mother is talking about what she is doing, because she is showing the truth. As such she says that she is going to give everything she has to children, even for those who are
